Emily Austin writes mentally ill queer people in their 20s better than anybody. And not just cutesy mentally ill but a deep dive into what it really looks like and the impacts it has on all facets of life, friends, family, jobs, presence in the world. The main character has anxiety, but as someone with OCD, she read very OCD-coded and it felt very refreshing to see that displayed with such honesty and not shying away from the mental torment it can bring or the absurdity of some of the things that it makes you do. Emily’s characters are always deeply relatable and brutally honest and Gilda was no different.
