The Girls’ Guide to Hunting and Fishing is anything but an outdoors, feminist book. The short stories follow Jane Rosenal throughout her life as she navigates the complex terrain of sex, love, relationships, and the workplace. Although it’s a little dated, the themes found in the relationships described in the book can still be transferred to today’s era of situationships.

Unfortunately, this book, to me, is the definition of a three star book. The writing is well done, especially on the descriptions of dating culture. However, content wise, it’s lacking. Jane is portrayed as a teenager stuck in a 20-something year old’s body, and desperately needs some therapy for how she views relationships and the world. There’s limited character development, with only a few pages towards the end of the novel, as throughout the book, she’s perpetually in a cycle of relationships with toxic men (although that does seem reminiscent to today’s general dating pool).

Overall, it’s a decent find at a thrift store or a little free library, but if you’re looking for a good coming-to-age story, this isn’t it.

Not bad, but not memorable. It felt shallow and was a bit boring.

The only reason I didn't give this book a 5 is because there is an odd chapter about her neighbors that has no relation to the rest of the story...I really wonder what happened to them. I love Jane and I think I might have been Jane earlier in my life...

This is a book I hated until I loved. I started it 3 or 4 times and hated the first two chapters. But then I kept reading and really enjoyed where Bank took the story and Jane's character. Definitely glad I stuck it out!
