3.5 i guess?? rounded down?

i read this because it's my friend's favourite book and 3-4 years ago i probably would have liked this a lot more than i do now. not a good timing thing for me right now.

Fantastic!!!!

capital d Delightful

Funny, realistic anecdotes/short stories about a young woman as she deals with the ups and downs of family, friends, dating and the workplace.

Elle said about this book--"A funny, fresh Baedeker of the alternately confusing and empowering state of being female in late-twentieth-century America." I would say it's really only a guide to being female among the East Coast, wealthy, New York and Philadelphia, prep school and publishing type folks. Which is okay, but don't pretend, Elle, that it has much to do with my life in the flyover part of America. This is more a collection of short stories than a novel, and the last one, which gives the book it's title is my favorite. The main character basically uses "The Rules" on a man out of desperation and almost loses him, and that's funny. I suppose some people's lives are like this, just not mine.

Although I enjoyed this book, and appreciated some very funny lines and the sort of dispassionate voice of the narrator, I never quite connected with her. I was frustrated with her, and felt she just sort of passed through her life without living it, which maybe was the point, but still frutstrating. I didnt' understand her relationship with Archie, or at least not its long pull on her over time because I wanted her to be herself, not what he thought she should be.

2.5 STARS

"After following the advice from a manual called "How to Meet and Marry Mr Right", Jane learns that in love there is neither pattern nor promise, and never rules. This is a funny collection of connected stories and a portrait of Jane, a woman manoeuvring her way through love, sex and relationships." (From Amazon)

Meh...no bridget jones that's for sure. A younger women in love with an older man...nope still does not catch my interest.
