This book is realistic fiction/multi-perspective family drama gold. The writing is gorgeous. Even the side conversations are witty. No notes. We need more messy family narratives.

I liked this a lot. A couple characters reminded me of Where’d You Go, Bernadette.

This was a well-written story that addresses so many aspects of family...what does that word mean? Is family family only your immediate, day to day members? Is it only your biological family, or, as some say, your "real" family?

The book acknowledges that there are many (legitimate) sides to adoption...feelings of despair, last resort choice, abandonment, joy, gratefulness. And, I think it helps to provide a clear narrative that there is no right answer.

Being adopted (as an infant), I have my own feelings, none of which have ever been negative. I never once saw it as a last resort because my adoptive parents had no other options. I was always made to feel that it was a fantastic, beautiful choice that they were offered. On the flip side, I never felt abandoned, that my birth parents didn't "want" me. I never thought about that...only that they also made a choice that benefitted me...providing a stable, loving home that they could likely not provide. I hope they were at peace with their decision, but honestly, I never spent much time thinking about it.

All of these views are told in a clever and, at times, really funny story. I will ne reading more from this author
