Did I request this ebook from the library thinking it would be a fun holiday read? Yes. Was it meant for someone in junior high? Yes. Did I read the whole thing even though it wasn’t available to check out until 6 weeks after Christmas? Also yes.

The love between Lila and teddy was so adorable, she had her secret blog while he had his secret rock climbing skills

lila is a great main character. she’s determined and organized and had good character development! i loved her obsession with books and the fact that she had her own book blog was super cool!

the romance was cute, definitely not my favorite, but still enjoyable to read about. i liked how it wasn’t perfect.

there were only a couple things i didn’t like about the holiday switch, but otherwise it was a pretty cute romance!!

the holiday switch is perfect if you like small-town romances! plus, it’s less than 300 pages!! ⋆꙳•̩̩͙❅*̩̩͙‧͙

➪ my favorite quotes:
“books distracted me; they gave me hope.”

The Holiday Switch by Tif Marcelo.
YA/Romance

Now, I will admit that I am not big on romance novels. I’ve grown past my ‘Nicholas Sparks era’ ever since Safe Haven came out because everyone else laid the cheese on too thick and frankly, I just grew up and learned about realistic romance for myself. But this book was cute!
I will say that some of the internal dialogue of the main character is, well, a little cringey, but it’s a holiday book with Christmas infused dialogue. Some of my favorites: “Jumping Jack Frost!” Or maybe, “ What the H.E. double candy canes is going on?”
It’s not all cringe though, in fact those references come through less and less. This book was a very enjoyable and quick read. Very Young Adult, maybe some Contemporary style writing in there. I’m not an expert on where the contemporary line is drawn, so don’t come for me if I’m wrong in that assumption.
Our protagonist in this case is a book nut like the rest of us (if you’re here, I have to assume that you are too, right?). And hey, she has a blog where she discusses the books she reads (primarily holiday books) and their tropes. Which is a good concept because the back cover of a book doesn’t really give you everything you ACTUALLY want to know. Those who know me, know I am a big proponent of NOT reading what the book is about - I want to go in blind. I find that I enjoy the book so much more than I would have if I had a clue on the setting or plot, but most people look for books according to tropes that intrigue them the most. This is why book blogs are clearly for the greater good!
And if you’re curious.. I typically judge the book by the cover (sue me) and read the first page or so before I decide if it’s something that I am willing to purchase and read. I have to be captured relatively quickly so I don’t feel like I’m forcing myself to read a book I didn’t want in the end.

Speaking of tropes.. There’s several sprinkled in this book:
- enemies to lovers
- slow burn
- grumpy vs. sunshine (or Type A vs. Type B)
- forced proximity

I found this recommendation via BookTok. It was on several account holder’s top 10’s for the year, so I went for it. The chapters are short, so it made reading through pretty easy. I read it in less than 24 hours at 261 pages. Cute, clean (12-14+), and honestly better than the hallmark movie cliches. Yep, I said it!
I recommend if you’re in a slump and need something short, sweet, and to the point to get you back in the groove.

4/5 stars.

Review: This book was a true representation of the average teenager making a bigger deal out of things than necessary (I am guilty myself). The low stake problems felt much stronger and I caught myself holding my breath more than once. It was quite the pallet cleanser to what I usually read, considering it is YA. Holiday cheer is a main theme throughout but didn’t feel overpowering, just enough to set the stakes and keep the plot going.
There was one main plot hole issue that I could not get over, otherwise it was a fun, quick read.

Maybe it’s because I don’t read much or connect to YA characters like I used to, because this was not it for me.

The two lovey characters started out REALLY disliking each other, and for what? Our hero was sort of rude to Lila from the get go, and then on and off again throughout the book. Why? We don’t know. They go from disliking each other to automatic almost love. Maybe if I would have felt some sort of connection, but honestly these characters were not a good fit IMO.

The “oh krampus” stuff, she’s 18 not 10. It’s ok to say the word shit.

Again, maybe I’m just not into YA romances anymore because this was a waste of time IMO.

(I listened to this via audio and also disliked the narrator. She was too bland. Made the mother sound like she had a sore throat. Idk. Not into it.)
