The DC YA books have been great and this is another one to add to the list. Protagonist Mandy is a plus-size goth darling. I love her coming of age story, and am so delighted that younger readers are getting to see such body diversity and queer rep in their books.
Starfire’s outfits in the regular comics have always irked me but this book lets her own her unique, if revealing, fashion style. It works and gives her the agency she deserves without the lasciviousness.
I love the art. It’s stunning and cute with so much colour. Can mainstream comics please adopt these palettes?
A fab read and I do hope we get to meet Mandy again in future books.

I am not very familiar with Starfire, so I wasn't sure if that would be a problem for reading this, but this was a fantastic coming of age story. It was really enjoyable and cute!
This was such an adorable, wonderful read! It's very much a non-canon/AU story but a very neat take on Starfire and the Titans. Mandy, Starfire's daughter, is a high schooler dealing with college applications, crushes, her mother's "job", and tons of expectations about all of it. The writing is fun, the art is expressive, and it was a very enjoyable read.
THIS WAS SO GOOD! I really loved seeing Starfire (and the Titans) from Mandy's perspective, and I love having a queer plus-size hero in the mix, too. And the art was GORGEOUS!
“Truly. Would it not be easier to be flying through space fighting aliens right now? I mean, I’m assuming. There’s no way it’s worse than high school.”
I LOVED this graphic novel. To echo what another user said in their review, this is not meant for the 45-year old men who have been longtime fans of DC And Teen Titans. And that should be a GOOD thing.
Storytelling and art should grow and evolve over time to reflect the society we live in. Comics are art in both senses and this is a beautiful reflection of the younger generation it was written for.
All of the characters were extremely likable, the art-style was beautiful, and the story can speak to all young adults who feel a little misunderstood. I also really liked the cameos from the rest of the Titans as older heroes and the view of heroes through the lens of celebrity. Very well done.
If we keep re-hashing the same old superhero storylines it goes stale…which is exactly why there are so many different versions in each universe.
Bottom line: This is a YA DC graphic novel that does an amazing job of connecting with a younger audience of fans. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it unequivocally accomplished what it set out to do.

I am Not Starfire is a coming of age story about self and accepting yourself. It is also an original LGBTQ+ story from DC Comics in the Young Adult Graphic Novels series.
We follow Starfire’s seventeen-year-old daughter Mandy as she is trying to get through high school knowing that she has always been different and living under the shadow of her mother. Mandy wants to tread her own path in style and life and her mother is too out of touch to seem to understand that.
I enjoyed this graphic novel, it had a lot of the teenage angst that is a common emotion during this time in some teens lives. Mandy is also in the LGBTQ+ crowd and learning to come to terms with that for herself all while dealing with the pressure to go to college which she doesn't think is for her. The emotions were strong throughout this graphic novel and they were very indicitive of what it is like to be a teen (at least from my point of view).
The story flowed well, there was enough normal teenage life to off-set the superhero Teen Titan parts. I felt like the ending was kind of rushed a bit. It was refreshing to see a realisitc teen character with a real body shape that is learning to be herself and not giving into the pressures of others. I think that this will be a good read for teens.

I tend to be a bit mean with my ratings myself - like I would probably give this a 3.4 but surely this deserves more than its goodreads rating. For its genre it’s lovely! Idk why people got beef.
