The book can be very off-putting, it has mentions of flaying and books made of skin. If it was not for that, I would've rated it 4/5 instead of 3/5. I liked the main character, her beliefs were challenged and reacted very realistically. I had no idea if she would give up on or hold on to her beliefs until the end. She's not naive but does hold on to hope. Her actions and the consequences always seem fair and understandable. The end is a bit sudden compared to the pacing of the rest of the book.
Edit after finishing the series: The story and characters go downhill a lot. I do not recommend starting the series.

I’m still processing this read, but overall I really enjoyed it! I was glad to read a YA fiction where a love interest wasn’t a main part of the storyline. I love reading confused and bold women!
Update: I forgot there will be a sequel to this book! I’m glad because I felt like I read an entire novel only to be left with feeling, ‘what?’.

Incredibly meh.
The premise is kind of gross but kind of interesting, so I decided to keep reading. Juxtaposition of modern and mythical dystopian setting also kind of interesting, but doesn't quite work. Doesn't stand alone well as a book, and isn't interesting enough to read the rest of the series to see if it goes somewhere.

I won a copy through a giveaway on Goodreads. This was very interesting and well-written. I struggled near the end with the character’s reaction to a scene, but it didn’t last long. The ending definitely had me wanting Book 2, when it’s eventually released. All in all, this was a book I thoroughly enjoyed.

I had a few issues right off the bat... Did not like the writing style. Period. It felt so flat and uninteresting. The dialogue just took you out of the story. The beginning is very info dumpy, but not in a good way. It was just the main character walking around downtown, staring at the buildings, then diving into the background of evvvverything. I kept spacing out through the entire second chapter.
The thought behind this book was fascinating, but not executed well. I could tell it was going to be one of those book I was going to have to force myself through. It's 2022, we are past that...
