what. i was so confused.

A tale of an expatriate Scot who finds himself caught up in an assassination plot threatening international peace.

The protagonist Hannay wilfully pursues the adventure of which he could have easily turned over to the authorities, but that’s apparently, not Hannay’s style.

The story itself i found, on the nose and not one I particularly cared for. I enjoyed the action, but couldn’t connect to the convenient proceedings throughout. At no point did I think Hannay was in danger after his many “close scrapes”, and danger’s evaded - therefore, I couldn’t get excited about the prospect of a climax, other than what I expected obvious.

I think in the right hands this book could be enjoyable, but I can’t say I posses said hands.

Jolly good fun, would definitely be on book tok if it came out today

Considering what a short book this is, it took me a loooonng time to read. I think the trouble is the tedious, irritating narrator. Others have cited the improbable plot, but Buchan himself admits in the dedication that he was only setting out to write the sort of "dime novel" story "where the incidents defy the probabilities, and march just inside the borders of the possible." With that mental preparation for the story, I didn't judge the plot too harshly...except maybe being chased by guys in airplanes. (Really...) And I can definitely see why it has inspired movies. I'm interested to see the Hitchcock adaptation, because without Hannay's inner monologue bogging the reader down, it would probably be a pretty engaging story.

While I've seen a few of its many film incarnations, namely the the Hitchcock film & British television adaptations, I had never read the book. At only 230 pages and involving my favourite military conflict, the Great War, this was well past due.

Loved it. I had seen the BBC movie and really wanted to read the book. I enjoyed the book. A quick read with a good mystery.

Захоплюючий детектив. Це точно класика цього жанру з пригодами, шпигунством, несподіваними поворотами подій.
