I’ve wanted to read this book for years since enjoying the Hitchcock film and noticed it on my library app at only 150 pages, which reiterated my perception from the film of this as a pacy thriller that I could probably lose a pleasant afternoon to.
In short: if it’s even possible for a 150 page book to drag, John Buchan achieved this. It seems Hitchcock took the name and core premise (man finds himself mixed up in a spy conspiracy, goes on a jolly romp around Scotland) and added basically everything thrilling or suspenseful about it.
I can’t otherwise sum it up better than another reviewer already has here (lol):

A fun little adventure to read when you don't really feel like reading.
congratulations! this book took my 'one star review' virginity.
One of the best suspense novel(la)s I've read- a truly wonderful read. Nicely paced and well tied up at the end. I think I'll come back to this book many a time. (I can't quite understand the low rating- I think if you come across this book you should definitely give it a read)
