I picked this up because I was intrigued by the premise. And for the first half of the book or so I could not put it down. But the last half dragged and the ending was unsatisfying. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

3.5 stars. Quick read and intriguing premise. The story changes in the way it’s told halfway through, which I wasn’t a fan of. I was really into the first part but by the end, I found several threads of the story to be drawn out. I liked the characters and overall premise. Wouldn’t mind reading another book by this author.
Great idea, average execution. I was really excited the first third of the book. It captured my attention, but as the book (dragged) on I felt a bit disappointed. So many bad decisions, so many unrealistic situations, and just found myself getting annoyed with characters. The last third of the book was so far fetched, that I thought I was reading a separate book. Wish it had been better, so much potential, but definitely had to force myself to finish it.
God I hate wasting money on a new book that I can’t finish. While I loved the series set in Belfast during the Troubles, this was appalling and will likely stop me buying any more of Mr McKinty’s books.
To start with, the blurb told me what the whole story was going to be about. I was going to suffer along with the protagonist as she dealt with the kidnapping. We all knew the child at the centre of the story would survive. So there is nothing to expect. No real suspense. Just a crazy ride and an implausible ending. I could not bear to keep reading. Skipped to the end read the last few chapters and was rewarded in my expectations of ‘disappointment’. So sad when I held the author in such high esteem before.
Being cynical I suspect this book was written for commercial purposes in the US and nothing else.
I read that this started life as a short story. It was a mash up of a couple of issues that McKinty found interesting. Both of which is a fine beginning but perhaps this should’ve stayed as a short story. I feel slightly ripped off.
Now what am I going to do with the book?
