This book has a lot of elements I really enjoy, but the sum didn't exceed the parts. I enjoy a good mystery story. It was nice to be put in the perspective of a disabled person to better understand their difficulties. Obviously love the dog. The drink recipes to start the chapters is excellent! Slightly convoluted plot, but would read more of these.

Very awkward writing style. Author feels insecure in the (for lack of a better term) "representation value" of her characters such that the narrative feels like it keeps being put on pause to put emphasis on it. For example, during the murder discovery the main character is covered in blood, the body is on the ground, and the authorities are frantically being called.... and an unnamed character comes over and asks the main character if they can pet her support animal....just so the narration can spend a paragraph to on digress why you shouldn't do that. The character never comes up again and the plot moves forward as normal and it isn't like the author doesn't use more elegant ways to portray the main character's disability in other parts of the book so these digressions feel more like mini lectures for the reader which just kills the tension she's trying to build. The awkwardness is excusable in the set up but three-four chapters in during the initial murder investigation it becomes so grating.

New-to-me author and I'll definitely read more. Things I love:
--main character suffers from chronic pain and sometimes needs mobility assistance
--good world building with the assumption of habitation of other planets
--characters are called Mx.
--people introduce themselves with pronouns, several characters are they/them. Descriptions of characters don't assume gender binaries
--there's a dog! (everything ends happily, the dog is fine)
--the mystery is good
--excellent incorporation of futuristic details into the plot and mystery clues etc.
--there's a badass lawyer who is now my favorite representation of law in fiction. She crochets throughout the book and has the best curses I have read in many years.
I thought it was very well done, eager to read more.
