30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 2
Book 14/30

After sitting on it for over a month, I think I'm going to chalk this one up to being the wrong book at the wrong time for me. When I do my eventual Full Stephen King Re-Read™ I'm hoping I will enjoy it more. (This won't be for ages. I've still got about half his back catalog to go the first time around.)

I was telling myself the story of this book before writing this review, and it all sounded great, to be honest. I still don't know why my attention couldn't really snag on it. It's so small! I've read Stephen King books in less time that were l i t e r a l l y four times its size. I even tried the audiobook and that didn't help because it was an older production, and Anne Heche wasn't a great choice for narrator.

This is a survivalist story with strong horror elements. Our main character is Trisha, who loves baseball, and loves Tom Gordon, the relief pitcher for the Red Sox. On a hike with her bickering mother and brother, she becomes lost in the woods and must survive until she can find her way back to civilization. She uses her Walkman and Tom Gordon as a sort of guide, as she can pick up the current Red Sox game on the radio. The book is split into "innings" which I thought was clever. It has a satisfying ending.

It just didn't catch me, for whatever reason. Rating it three stars for now, but it's really just a placeholder rating. It deserves more.
