“ The World had teeth and it could bite you with them anytime it wanted”

That, simultaneously, did not feel like horror and also was my worst nightmare.
I was so scared of getting lost in the woods when I was younger. To the point where at Trisha’s age I cried when friends suggested we get lost in the woods and try to find our way out.. as a birthday party game.. To be fair, we were at a small state park with lots of paths and signs and totally would’ve been fine. It’s not even the fear of what dangerous things could be in the woods. It’s just the idea of being lost. In never ending woods.

This was good. Just didn’t love the baseball aspect of it.

One of my favs!

I really enjoyed this one. King takes a turn away from his usual horror and crafts a story that is equally tense and suspenseful, but without the blatant supernatural element. Instead, this is a quieter book that centers on the personal arc Trisha takes, both emotionally and physically.

This book really reminded me quite strongly of the novels written by Ken Thomasma, particularly Naya Nuki. There was a strong element of survival and determination to win in the face of nature turning against her that ran really strong through both books. The difference, of course, is that King writes for adult audiences.

I have two reactions to Stephen King novels: boredom, and emotional investment to the point that I start freaking out and have to find a friend to rant and shake the book at. I had the latter reaction with this novel, clearly. Trisha's perseverance and growing bravery struck home for me. I also liked her dedication to Tom Gordon and the Red Sox. The entire novel felt a lot more real and immediate than some of King's more famous horror novels, too (I'm looking at you, Salem's Lot).

About 4 people in the past month have told me this is their favorite Stephen King book so I thought I'd give it a shot. And... it's fine. Interesting. That's pretty much all I can think to say about it.
