First, I want to say thank you to The Book Club Cookbook and Avon Books. We had so much fun with So We Meet Again by Suzanne Park!

That we all could relate to Jessie Kim made for a lively discussion for us! We have a lawyer, police officer, teacher, a chief, bank manager and before I became a stay at home mom, I was a corporate manager for what was called Flying J! So each one of us has had to deal with something similar to Jessie! So you can just imagine the discussion that this book created for us!

Jessie Kim is a Wall Street investment banker. For years she has worked her butt off trying to climb the corporate ladder. When an opportunity for a promotion comes, she thinks after years of all nighters, layoff and doing Wyatt’s work will pay off. But in the end Wyatt gets the promotion! The last straw is when she overhears the sexist comments her bosses have to say about her is the final straw she walks out and moves back to her childhood home!

Now back home, she has to deal with her domineering mother hooking her up with her childhood nemesis, Daniel Choi! Even though it’s the last thing she wants, she can't help but like him.

“He was that guy. The obnoxiously endearing one who eventually burrowed his way into your heart.”

Deciding to make a career change, she starts a cooking vlog! But her mother, not being able to help herself, walks in during her show! Let the fun begin! Even though she isn't thrilled with having to work with her mom, especially when past experiences had been stressful, she has to admit with her mom the show had become an instant hit! I mean really what else could go wrong?

“Umma to the rescue!”

It was a heartwarming story about family, taking a chance and starting over and believing in your own self worth. The relationship between Jessie and her mother is hilarious, but it also feels real. Oh, and just a heads up eat before you read this book it might help, but probably not with the hunger and the cravings you will get from all the delicious food you will hear about! Happy reading everyone!

“UMMA APPROVED”

a cute and cozy story about family, love and finding oneself along the way. this book feels like a love letter to nashville, too, which made it so fun. i could actually picture every setting. park’s depiction of corporate america is so spot on it hurts and the reality of existential crises in your late twenties was so accurate. i loved the focus on balance between jessie’s personal journey, relationships with her parents, and (of course) her delightful budding interest in daniel. such a great read!

I really enjoyed the cultural and women-in-business aspect of the story. It drew attention to those common issues without getting too soapboxy.
SpoilerI just wished Jess could have really put Wyatt in his place at the end.

But there were a lot of little elements that felt unrealistic and unbelievable. Jess's business took off immediately and just kept going, so when she would get upset about hitting a hurdle, it felt whiney because she already had 15 other things lined up or in the works. She had so many amazing connections and opportunities handed to her constantly and it didn't feel like she actually had to work for any of it. There were several mentions about how difficult it can be to start a business and how long it takes to start seeing a profit, but the time-skips kept me from feeling it. Instead it felt like everything just kept falling in her lap and snowballing. Some of the dialogue also felt too detailed and unrealistic, especially when it came to talking about food.

The "romance" was too fast and based solely on physical attraction. They never talked, jumping straight from frenemy banter to making out, and then Jess would get upset because she hadn't been told something when they had never communicated. When their moment of big conflict finally came, I felt like Jess overreacted, (partially because, as mentioned above, it didn't file like a huge problem). But then she forgave him just as quickly.
SpoilerI mean - she literally blocked him on her phone, but then when they meet again, he just says, "trust me" and she did! Which he deserved to be trusted but it made her seem so melodramatic and wishywashy.
Not to mention Daniel was missing from huge chunks of the story altogether.

Lastly, I didn't love the narration on the audio book. It was very clear and articulate but a little flat/robotic. I had a hard time telling character voices apart, and I never knew when Jess was thinking something vs speaking aloud.

Need a new book to add to your collection? Try Suzanne Parks book So we meet again. If you like a quick fun read, then I would pick up this book. So we meet again follows Jessie Kim on her journey to finding her passion and learning to gain self-confidence all while working alongside her childhood nemesis & potential lover Daniel Choi.
