i always appreciate the conversational tone in a lot of chomsky's publications. it makes the content more accessible despite its density. while this is certainly an academic text which requires active attention, pappé's directness also exemplifies that this book was meant to be understood, not deliberately confusing or convoluted as you sometimes see with dense texts like this.
"The last paradox is that the tale of Palestine from the beginning until today is a simple story of colonialism and dispossession, yet the world treats it as a multifaceted and complex story—hard to understand and even harder to solve. Indeed, the story of Palestine has been told before: European settlers coming to a foreign land, settling there, and either committing genocide against or expelling the indigenous people. The Zionists have not invented anything new in this respect."

The format was interesting because it’s truly a dialogue, but I think it ultimately hurts the impact and flow of the book. Given that the two authors/speakers don’t agree on all fronts, of course at points I’m also not going to agree with one or both of them, but I found so much of this to be dated (it’s from 2015 so, yes, that makes sense, but it’s a little too dated at times to be reading with modern context).
I think the majority of it is great— the introduction in particular is a wonderful perspective on activism. And let me be clear, I’m no expert, but I do think there are some clear issues here (occasionally pandering to moderate or palatable ideologies being one of them). I’m going to put a lot of weight on the fact that it’s from 2015, but regardless I would’ve loved to hear Palestinian voices somewherel in here.

I got this off a list of best books to help you understand Palestine/Israel, and while it may be that, it wasn't really the broad overview and historical perspective that I was hoping for, so my rating is based on my complete lack of foundation to understand this. It does give some basic information, but it wasn't enough to ground me. I can't make any judgment past that.

Excellent and quite concise way to get some important context for how we got here. Here being this not-actually-that-complicated place in history. Will be recommending. (So important, read x2)
