The writing is beautiful in this but ugh...its so long! The story just went on and on but the story just wasn't interesting enough to hold my interest.

This book is a beast! Right from the start, it’s clear that Rice’s writing is incredibly detailed (sometimes too much so). The File on the Mayfair Witches section—taking up about 35% of the book—was a slog. So many minor characters, endless ancestry research, and Talamasca reports that felt unnecessary. But that last 20%? Pure intrigue! The pacing finally picked up, and I was hooked. Rowan, Lasher, and the dark family legacy kept me questioning everything. Final thoughts: A slow-burn, overly wordy read, but ultimately fascinating. The ending convinced me to continue the series!

A lineage of witches conceived by incest serve a dubious spirit Lasher, who promises them extravagant riches and ecstatic pleasure in exchange for aid in lending him a corporeal form. The protagonist Rowan and her whirlwind romance partner, Michael, learn of Rowan’s colorful family history and believe themselves to be clever enough to defeat this genealogical pattern, yet they do not realize what exactly they are up against. Rice offers gorgeous descriptions of New Orleans and sultry scenes that almost allow the reader to momentarily forget the darker elements of this story.

Woof! This book was longggggg. 1056 pages. The audiobook was 50 hours. I honestly think it could’ve been cut in half and the story would be just fine.

I loved the history of the Mayfair witches and all the magic. I loathed the relationship between Michael and Rowan. I found myself rolling my eyes at their parts. I hate even more all the incest in that family, Lasher’s relationship with Rowan, and Lasher’s weird adult/baby body description. It creeped me out
