The Witching Hour

Anne Rice

3.8 AVERAGE

this book is wild and messed up and entirely too long. I did not need four hundred pages of recounting the thirteen generations of mayfair witches. I did not need 50+ pages of Michael talking about how he would renovate the house.

also, bet rowan wishes she'd listened to Ellie now.

An absolute banger, except the last part. It was a little slow for the momentum it built. The middle portion of the book is certainly the strongest and I'm glad I got to read it.
I'm unsure if the second book in the series will do any better.

Dark, atmospheric, and completely immersive. Anne Rice takes you deep into the Mayfair family’s tangled history, filled with power, magic, and the ever-haunting presence of Lasher. The New Orleans setting is lush and gothic, and the characters feel incredibly layered and real.

That said, it does drag in places—Rice’s love for detail sometimes slows the story down. But overall, the payoff is worth it. A moody, unforgettable family saga that lingers long after the last page.

I wanted to like this book. And I did for the vast majority. But the ending dragged on too long. There was too much nothing happening in the middle of the end. Then the ending felt rushed. The writing and world building were phenomenal. This is for those who like to know everything possible or you like historical fiction from the perspective of a historian

As someone who still has never made it through “Interview With a Vampire” despite numerous attempts, I’m not sure why I even tried this but I’m glad I did.  Yes, it’s overwrought; it’s gothic and dark and soapy and weird.  I found it entertaining.
