susuwatari69's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 72%

I just can’t. I’m so bored and it’s so weird. I just don’t care enough to finish and I didn’t connect with the writing at all.

The historical incest really made me dislike this. After reading another person's review it pretty much summed up the majority of my feelings to date on the book. The review didn't paint an interesting or worthwhile picture of the rest of the book. So just gonna put this one down....

Frame story was meh. Inner story (history of Mayfair witches) was superb.

Beware if you object to reading glorifications of incest and/or rape. Also I really feel like the story could have been about half of its unnecessarily long length. Lots of repetition of background material that kept making the same point over and over.

There was a lot to like about this book and I have no problem at all with Anne Rice's writing skills. I just think it could have been about 400 pages shorter. I was captivated with a lot of the history of the witches but some of it just went on and on and on until I found myself skimming paragraphs shamelessly. I found both Michael Curry and Rowan Mayfair difficult to like but parts of their story were interesting as well. In the end, I find myself still interested in the continuation of the story and will most likely try the next book in the series.
