This book is so deeply fucked up, and unfortunately I really enjoyed it

I found it verbose at times, however, I'm not sure the story would be the same without it. It took over 250 pages before I felt the story would go somewhere, then halfway through before I felt truly engaged. I'm glad I stuck with it, Anne Rice's style of writing is very different than the authors I'm used to reading from and challenges my ability to visualize a story. I will continue the series!
One of the lengthiest and most tedious reading experiences of my life.

I'm quite familiar with Anne Rice's 'Vampire Chronicles' having read all of them but this series had always alluded me for some reason. Despite the 2 worlds overlapping in the unfortunately awful 'Blood Canticle' I still had no desire to tackle this book.
I'm glad I waited to read it. The "final" vampire book a distant memory, I was ready to dive into this 1000+ page book. It's wonderfully written, at times dense but almost always engaging. Following the 2 characters Rowan and Michael the story expands into the rich history of the Mayfair witches. Despite dragging in a few spots where it read like a history textbook, I really loved the characters and the lore.
The consensus seems to be that the next 2 in the series pale in comparison but I will give them a chance.
