Is this book good? I dont know. It’s well written and immensely interesting, but it’s also problematic and like many Anne Rice books too caught up in her odd interpretations about what lies at the heart of people.
Moderate: Addiction, Adult/minor relationship, Incest, Miscarriage, Pedophilia, Racism, Rape, Sexism, Sexual violence, Suicidal thoughts, Toxic relationship, Forced institutionalization, Religious bigotry, Abortion, Murder, Gaslighting, Sexual harassment

Very detailed book. Interesting, but took forever for me to read because of the rich, detailed history in the first 2/3 of the book. Tried to keep everything straight! I very much enjoyed it though.
Anne Rice's descriptive writing style is lush and seductive. The story engrossed my senses almost immediately.
The plot of "The Witching Hour" starts off very excitingly in the beginning with the main storyline, then wanes in to a richly-detailed historic narrative that quickly becomes daunting to read and arduous to follow. The history has a Biblical presence to it, describing in depth who is from where, who begot whom...I fell asleep many, many times while struggling through the historical subplot.
Once the history of the Mayfair Witches returns to central plot of the late twentieth century, the story picks back up. Understands the history make it quite easy for one to see where the plot will go. The ease with which I figured out the ending was a bit disappointing, but Rice really does an adequate job foreshadowing and presenting the history for one to piece the puzzle.
The rapturously vivid writing is what made this book a four-star book. One can feel the heat, the humidity, and all of the sensations and emotions the characters experience. Without this very precise and specific ambiance, this book would only be of three-star caliber.

Entiendo que es el primero de una trilogía, pero no se puede terminar con un final tan malo, de esa forma tan abrupta y anticlimática. Encima luego de leer 1260 páginas, que no es precisamente poco. El final le baja dos estrellas.
I don't really have too much to say about this book. I adored the writing style and the imagery. The word choice and sentence structures were strong. However (and I don't normally say this) I just wish it was shorter. To me it seemed like there was quite a lot of extra fluff, and there were pages I just outright skipped because I was bored. But towards the very end the book really started to pick up. So I gave it a three star rating because I enjoyed it well enough.

anne rice where have you been all my life? i can't believe this was the first i've read (besides her erotica... :) )
the complex history of this family is so compelling i could not put this book down! nor could i stop thinking about it for MONTHS after reading! once i'm done with the mayfair witches series i will be reading her vampire chronicles. and then everything else she's ever written.
