The Witching Hour

Anne Rice

3.8 AVERAGE

I wanted to give it a 2.5 really. I skimmed through many many pages. Since the second part was the actual family chronicle, I think the first part should have just been included there, with the doctor and Rita Mae telling their versions, and just leaving the Michael story. I don't know... I now need some chick lit so I can forget the incest scenes and the last scene with the baby and the spirit.

DID NOT FINISH

DNF after a valiant try. Bored the hell out of me even though it had no right to. Picking up Ramses instead.

1/2 good . other 1/2 is weirdo demented. characters r unlikable but it was still good? exception for (redacted). i love you so much and i am so so sorry for what happened to you.

I really enjoyed this book though it was super long. Just reading at night before bed made it take a long time but it was definitely worth the read. I imagine that I will read the rest as I am curious as to what happens to the characters. I have read some of her other books and was not caught as quickly as I was with this one. It didn't take long for me to be interested and connected to continue reading. There are some dry spells but they do contribute to the story. At 1000 pages, you have to be dedicated to read this but I am glad that I did.

3,5

This book was hard to finish. I enjoyed certain aspects such as the coming together of multiple stories, but it really should have come with a trigger warning. The author glorifies rape scenarios and then shows abortion in a very disturbing light that might be traumatic for some readers. I myself was not triggered but it did leave a dirty taste to the book. Incest, manipulation, and alcoholism all through the story... if I hadn't paid full price for the book, I wouldn't have bothered finishing it. I think the overall storyline was okay but if it had a different delivery it could have been so much more in less than a 1000 pages. Witches, family legacies, secret societies, and New Orleans are all beautiful things so how did it feel so icky the entire time. If you want a twisted dark fantasy then feel free but definitely not my cup of tea.

This is a very long book. I read it in high school and again in college. I tried to read it again a few years ago and got stuck in the middle. I feel really surprised I read this whole thing in high school, just based on the storytelling style. So much of the book isn't about action, but just sets the tone for the story, gives the history of the Mayfair family, and puts you into the main characters' current lives. There is a new television show based on this book. After watching it, I really wanted to dig back into this world again. The show was so poorly done and left me wanting Anne Rice's writing, her characters, and her attention to detail. Also, I've been to New Orleans now and it was enthralling to read the descriptions and see how the characters love this incredible city.

“She had understood before she had ever dreamed of a city such as this, where every texture, every color, leapt out at you, where every fragrance was a drug, and the air itself was something alive and breathing.”

Anne Rice pulled a Dennis and forgot to tell me this was part of a series. After a million pages you get denied.

But it's a fantastic read. The lives of the Mayfairs is so enthralling. The imagery Rice uses is breathtaking and beautiful. I loved the watchers (can't remember how to spell the name of that group at present lol) and I loved well just about everything about this book except for the end... and then there was Lasher and I won't go into how disappointing that was. This book would have gotten 5 stars except for the ending and the fact that the next book in the series didn't pony up.

23 days! 23 DAYS! That is how long it took me to read this book and it really shouldn’t have.

Sure it was over 1,000 pages and it took almost 200 pages to hit the “OMG I have to finish reading this” point, but it definitely shouldn’t have taken this long. It was very well written and the story was fascinating. Unfortunately due to work and trying to edit my podcast it just took me forever.

You might be wondering why I didn’t just give up? Well, that’s complicated you see. A certain someone, who recommended Last Summer and The Bitterweed Path, also recommended this and I promised I would read at least one book every other month that he recommended. And like I said above, it wasn’t a bad book, it probably just wasn’t the best time for me to read this particular book. I’m definitely glad I read it and will read the sequels to complete the series and find out WTF happened!
