This sequel is very different from the Handmaids Tale. But it is nice to have a conclusion to the story.

This is going to be an odd review because I actually enjoyed my reading experience more so than The Handmaids Tale. However, I do not think that this book was needed nor is it at good. When I read The Handmaids Tale, I instantly knew it was going to be a book that I thought of often but I found it difficult at times to get into the story fully. I did not have that problem this time around with The Testaments. I listened to the audio and highly recommend it. As a fan of the TV show, having Aunt Lydia being narrated by who I think is Aunt Lydia made my experience that much more enjoyable. Told from three women's perspectives, we follow each of them on their journey and see how Gilead is in their lives. I was fully captivated the entire time and wanted to know what was going to happen with the three perspectives. I definitely enjoyed learning more about Gilead and watching the dynamics of the characters play out.
Margaret Atwood is an absolute queen! Loved seeing Gilead through the eyes of the characters she chose for The Testaments. 5/5!
A great sequel. What was really interesting was that it didn't actually follow the first story, but instead focused on the society and what happened to it; but had enough tidbits tied to the first to satisfy. Atwood's writing as well was at its usual excellence. Pretty quick paced with mostly short chapters. I guess to not be 5 star for me was just it wasn't new, which it couldn't be from being a sequel. So it maybe didn't have the same shock factor or make you think about the parallels to current society much more than the original already did.

I am so impressed by Atwood's ability to write a reality so terrifying that still holds onto real life. This book holds up a mirror to our current world and its history, showing the extremes but not too extreme to be unbelievable. This is such a valuable book, especially with the state of the US right now. This series is well worth the read.

This was somehow even better than the first book. Although it was a totally different storytelling, I loved the deeper insights in the „female sphere“ and the inner (societal) workings of Gilead.
Such a powerful story. I believe this is one of the fictional worlds that I will never be able to forget.
