wowowowowowow. so so good!!!!! this is the kind of book that you think about while you’re just standing in the shower with your eyes closed listening to lorde. this is definitely a book i see myself rereading whenever i’m going thru it. highly highly recommend, especially for anyone looking for sapphic stories

They're just too painfully 16, I just couldn't take it anymore

Nah, the writing was not for me, and the whole thing was dragging. Also, I am very disappointed that the cringiest make-out scene of 2021 came from a sapphic book. Idk, all the eel-with-legs and bacteria mentions just killed the romantic vibe for me.

I'm at a weird place where I'm still not sure whether or not I liked the writing style or not... Was expecting more concerning the ship wreck, but hey, strong story nonetheless.

INCREDIBLE. honestly an easy sell for someone whos already constantly dreaming about living on the coast of maine, but the escapism piece was so wonderful. violet is a great troubled character without being too melodramatic or annoying. could see this being a reread for SURE.

favorite line:
“now, please?” she asked, so very polite.

brief summary:
after violet’s brother tries to kill himself and violet shows hardly any sympathy, her family sends her to lyric, maine for the summer to “cool down.” violet initially hates it, but through an investigation of a shipwreck, begins to enjoy it more and makes some friends (and a ya know, Friend).

I was sold on this by "queer Twelfth Night" retelling - but there was so much heart and such moments of delicate prose tangling like our thoughts so often do I enjoyed it for so many more reasons that just that. I rarely find myself enjoying YA novels anymore, but this felt like the most realistic depiction of teenagers I've ever read, one that doesn't relegate them to any specific stereotype that I'm tired of reading. Overall, a great summer read, charming and deep.

There is a love triangle in the book between the main characters and two others apart of her friend group.
