This book was pretty good. I think that 4 stars might be high and 3 stars would be too low. I liked the characters and the overall plot and, but there were just a few things that I did not like. One of the things was the romance and friendships seemed to force. Usually when tragedy happens people stay away and only get closer if they want gossip.

I received this arc from Netgalley, all opinions are honest!

This was alright. I guess this is mystery, thriller, dark contemporary which is different from what I've read besides R.L Stine because I don't read anything related to contemporary. The beginning is so slow though, be warned but the ending was shocking!

An in depth review will be posted shortly on my blog!

EDIT: IN DEPTH REVIEW ON BLOG

This plot of this book was so stupid, but I couldn’t stop reading it 😂😂. Really nothing more to say :)

(( B E W A R E : there is only a spoiler in the third paragraph and most wont fully understand until they read the book so i’m not tagging it as spoilers!!!))

this book was pretty good at first but turned amazing about halfway through. there were a few slow parts at the beginning and another towards the end of the middle. other than those slow patches, i really enjoyed this.

after reading The Creeping and doing a little bit of research on this book, i had an idea of how the plot would turn out. with that said, all of my predictions were wrong 😂. if you ask me, both of the (major) plot twist in The Creeping and The Telling were equally outstanding. Sirowy was able to pull off both twists flawlessly and she left little to question

at first i was a bit confused when it came to Lana loving Ben but everything made sense and seemed. . . right. Sirowy didn’t make that part seemed forced, which i guess is the best way to write that?

the characters were thought out and there was some pretty good development with Lana and Caroline (and even Ben). for me, the core was a little hard to relate to but by the middle of the book i was (kind of) in love with them.

my only wish is another chapter at the end to tie up a few more things or to drag out the last chapter but i’m not mad about the ending.

overall, i really enjoyed this. i can’t really compare it to The Creeping because they were so different, yet very similar? if you were a fan of The Creeping, i definitely think you will enjoy this. if you haven’t read The Creeping but enjoyed this story / the way it was set up, i suggest you read it!!

This novel would have gotten 5 stars if it weren't for all the unnecessary swearing (even though it is understandable because the story line centers around teenagers). I LOVED this story, it kept me on the edge till the very last page. All the characters were so vivid and relatable. Everyone has met a Duncan, Rusty, Josh, Becca, Lana, and Carolynn in high school. Sirowy definitely has a gift of writing. Can't wait to read more from her.

RATING

Main character: 5 Lana

Writing: 7
Plot: 6
Enjoyment: 7
Atmosphere: 10
Intrigue: 8
Logic: 2

Total: 5,87 --- 3 stars

Notes: Lana is an unlikeable character and I don't have a problem with that, I admit I would have liked her character more if she would have chosen differently in the end - I think then this book could have blown me away, I saw coming that  Ben was alive and behind all this, mentally unstable and such and I would seriously have loved for her to ride into the sunset with him - she was so unlikeable why not go all the way and make her the villain in the end?. Since it's a mystery novel intrigue was there because I was hoping the end would be different. I gave only 2 points for logic because: I didn't understand in the least why a love between step siblings is so bad?? And why she never talked to him about it, if their relationship to one another was so good???. Sadly I didn't care for main or side characters until the end. But the atmosphere was very good, especially in the audiobook.

Plot twist was crazy

Meh. I probably should have stopped reading this after the first 75 pages left me uninspired. If you read her debut novel, this one is more of the same. She's good at tone and the sense of unease that pervades the story, but I don't care about the characters at all. I hung around because I did want to find out who was behind the murders, and also because I ran out of other stuff to read and figured I'd finish it before starting something new. The ending was pretty unsurprising, though I would have guessed at something more supernatural. Not sure if I'll keep reading this author.

Thanks to the publisher for a digital advance reader's copy, provided via Edelweiss.

I decided to buy and go into The Telling blind (which I never do) and I'm glad that I did!

What I liked:

I enjoy quick reads but I also like slow burns and I ended up reading this for about two weeks. I loved taking my time with the mystery and not rushing through it.

The characters!! Mainly, Lana, she was such an intriguing character and I connected with her point of view (thankfully it only had one pov, yay). The side characters were unique and it would be interesting to see novels of their point of view in the future. I liked the fact that some of the characters started off stereotypical and grew as the main characters got to know them.

The beautiful writing. The writing style was my cup of tea. It was full of metaphors and detail focused and it kept me reading until the end.

I love reading and guessing twists in mysteries (I do the same thing with tv/movies) and I did end up figuring out the big twist at the end. However, I did not guess all of the aspects so it was still a thrilling ending.

What I did not care for:

I took off about .5 for the last part of the book, the reveal and twist felt rushed and information was dumped in one chapter. I think the novel should been even longer (and it was almost 400 pages) to stretch the mystery out.

I recommend checking this amazing thriller out for the unique plot and the stunning writing.
