I think that one of the measures of a good writer is their ability to make the reader truly care about the characters and/or the issue that they are writing about.
In this case, Barbara Kingsolver took a topic that I honestly could not have cared less about, and wrote a book that had me completely gripped from beginning to end. This book left me actually caring about that issue and thinking about it for weeks.
Prodigal Summer is a novel about the interconnectedness (is that a word?) of EVERYTHING. The novel follows three distinct story lines, each about a different aspect of nature and how every creature and every act is connected. This is mirrored in the unseen connections between the characters and the interweaving of the seemingly separate storylines.
This was a very well written novel that not only kept me interested in a story and in the characters, but taught me a lot about environmental issues that I had never thought about before. This book was extremely persuasive; I'm completely sold now. Please go read this book, and afterwards, I dare you to buy non-organic fruit.

I enjoy Barbara Kingsolver and I’m excited to read Demon Copperhead as I’ve heard it’s wonderful. This book was a nice calm read but a bit too predictable and perhaps because of my background in biology felt a little on the nose. The last chapter especially taking on the voice of the coyote was too much for me. I would still recommend it I suppose but not a “must read”.

This was beautifully written as most of her books are. And it was fun to watch how the individual characters got woven together just as the individual characters in the woods are interwoven. A bit plodding for my taste, but beautifully written.

Lovely writing. Every time one character's chapter would end, I wanted only to continue on with that thread of the story. But amid a vivid portrait of the natural world, still vibrant amid all the trespasses of humanity, she writes a tender and perceptive appreciation of the human relationships that form and fit between the shape of society.
