Rules Do Not Apply

Ariel Levy

3.66 AVERAGE

Short, sad, painful. More like 3.5 stars.
emotional funny lighthearted reflective medium-paced

An easy, but thought-provoking read full of moments of vulnerability.

I received an advanced copy of this book. I wanted to like it more than I did. The writing is great by Ms. Levy is not a sympathetic person. This was self-absorption at its finest and I am not referring to her trek to Mongolia. That I understood - it was how she lived her life all the other times that pissed me off. She seems to go through life looking at and treating others as useful tools in her life, rather than actual people with feelings and identities.

3.5 - absolutely loved the writing style. being that skilled of a writer must be a powerful existence. but. as someone who has no interest in procreating, and who has zero tolerance for deceit and highly triggered by toxic and manipulative interpersonal cycles, i really struggled to emotionally connect with the story. the catalyst to the message. the overarching message, lesson, ethos was just the one i needed to hear at this point in my life, and im immeasurably grateful that i received it when i did. but selfishly i wish the content by which the spirit of the memoir was a little more palatable for me. i guess the rules don’t apply for me either.
challenging sad

3.5 stars. The writing was fantastic, the descriptions alluring. But the white privilege and selfish decisions throughout were difficult to overlook. Felt like a more modern, much more complicated Eat, Pray, Love even though honestly, they are nothing alike.

Read in one sitting, captivating and so well written. Not for the faint of heart or new/pregnant moms.

A Journey that's very real

There are no neat endings in this book. It's messy and sometimes troubling but also sweet and exhilarating. We don't control the narrative...nor does the author. Let yourself go when reading this memoir...join Ariel Levy as she offers a raw gritty glimpse into the journeys she has taken.

Cover to cover in one day means compelling. I finished this book with an ache in my heart and tears welling in my eyes.
