Ariel Levy and I could not be more different--in life, in the way we think about things, and in the way frame the world based on our experiences. And frankly--that made this a great read.
Not far into this, I realized that I'd read an excerpt about the writer from the chapter where she's in Mongolia (not to give too much away) and felt again that it was raw and powerful and horrifying. I've loved her work in the New Yorker, and recommend this for anyone looking for a modern memoir.

A wonderful read - a memoir that's raw and open and messy, just like life itself. A memoir of loss and healing from that loss, from a relationship that dies in the face of alcoholism to the slipping away of hope as Levy miscarries, this is thought-provoking and honest. Highly recommended.
Oh man, Levy's vocabulary, deployed with wit, intelligence, humor, and restraint. Esurient, lickerish, etc. And her turn of phrase (describing a woman who outpaced her own fertility - "She ran out of runway.") Her writing is superb! Yes, Levy seems blind to privilege, blind to her own lack of compassion for others (her mom's cancer as passing reference?). Still, I have to give this a four for powerhouse writing, and, as Roxane Gay mentions here on Goodreads, the willingness to put oneself on the page in an uncomfortable way. Very good and even compelling.
Tragedy after grief followed by sadness. This is not a fun memoir, but it is real. And everything she discussed about the struggles of fertility in your late 30s is way too true.

I've been in a reading slump, I think it's fair to say I started and didn't finish about 30 books last year. So it was such a pleasure to get entirely sucked into a story, read it all in one sitting, and be awake past bedtime to finish it.
This is a devastating story, told with admirable honesty. Truly, I can't imagine laying bare what Levy does. Beautiful, deeply honest, and written so well. A perfect read for fans of dark, challenging memoirs, specifically anyone who loved Wild by Cheryl Strayed.
