Splendido.
Read again after so many years, in the wake of having seen again the eponymous film with Anthony Hopkins, I increased the judgment from 4 to 5 stars, and decided that this is one of the best Stephen King books, despite not having had the success of others far more gory titles.
For all practical purposes is a unique bildungroman, that, instead of just the age of passage, explores the lives of its characters from childhood to adulthood, with in the half, unbelievably, Vietnam.
Perhaps the lack of success of this book lies in its sore depth, in the normal reactions, and madness, of many of its protagonists, in the certainty that each of them at the end will betray, just like we does in real life.
Beautiful.

I had a sense of deja vu while reading this, like I'd read it before....perhaps in the days before Goodreads. An excellent novel by Stephen King, a little different from the horror epics of the early days. I'm curious to see the movie now. :)

Low Men in Yellow Coats is a wonderful, nostalgic slice of life. Even the DT references don’t bog this down too much.

Bright-red Pennywise Clown noses
The eponymous novella takes a little longer to get going than Low Men, but it’s more proof that King has the literary muscle to flex when he needs to pull it out. Reads like a better version of The Body.
4 out of 5
Bright-red Pennywise Clown Noses
Blind Willie definitely feels like a piece that was retrofitted for this collection and it turns out that’s exactly what it is. Lives and dies by its metaphor. Not bad, just not so much a story as a writing prompt.
3 out of 5
Bright-red Pennywise Clown Noses
Why We’re in Vietnam is similar to Blind Willie in that it’s dependent on its metaphor, but it’s also a far more effective character piece, told both hauntingly and haltingly.

Bright-red Pennywise Clown Noses
Heavenly Shades of Night Are Falling is more of a denouement to Low Men than a full story, but it ties up the themes and characters well.
3.5 out of 5
Bright-red Pennywise Clown Noses
Overall, Hearts in Atlantis is one of King’s strongest collections thus far, and one of his most literary, as backhanded as that sounds. Beautiful, tragic, nostalgic, and damning, all at the same time.

I really didn't get it. Maybe watching the movie will help.
Such an interesting book. I can see where this tapestry of interlinked stories wouldn’t be to all tastes. The first part is universally selected as the favourite. No one does kids coming of age like King, and the story is absolutely on fire with emotions felt at their strongest at that undefinable exit point from childhood innocence.
The remaining parts though, are in my view equally good. They are all coming of age stories in their own way; stories of innocence lost and circles being closed both for better and for worse.
There are also books full of great writing that don't have very good stories. Read sometimes for the story, Bobby. Don't be like the book-snobs who won't do that. Read sometimes for the words-the language. Don't be like the play-it-safers that won't do that. But when you find a book that has both a good story and good words, treasure that book.
