“Women get on with it. For us it was a shadow war. There were no parades for us when it was over, no medals or mentions in history books. We did what we had to during the war, and when it was over, we picked up the pieces and started our lives over.”

While the ending did wrap a lot up for me, I kind of saw it coming from like 200 pages away. I don’t know why I found so much of the writing style really frustrating, but I felt like every emotional moment was never dwelled upon. It would be like one gut wrenching event, and then the writing would move on immediately. I also think it was trying to cover too much ground. Every event happened so quickly that they all just didn’t feel very important and weren’t very well described. I found myself rereading whole passages and pages because there would be very little explanation of how a character physically arrived at a destination. I also found Isabelle and Vianne pretty one dimensional for about 99% of the book: one is rebellious and rash, the other is a mom. genuinely so little deviation from that. Also writing a book that takes place almost entirely in French, but writing in english so occasionally there is a “oui” or “maman” thrown in there just takes me out of the setting rather than cements it idk that always feels like such an immature writing choice to me.
