What an amazing story. It was sad and so hard to read sometimes but it was beautifully executed.
This is not the first time Kristin Hannah has made me cry and it won’t be the last.
This story follows sisters Isabelle and Vianne, through the war. One will do anything to follow the rules and to keep her daughter safe, and the other will do what is right even if it means her death.
As the point of views switch between sisters, we see examples of bravery and courage and also of love and compassion. The amount of times I was on the edge of my seat was countless.
The cruelty was unbelievable and I think a good reminder of what people endured in that time in history. The resilience and bravery of the women is what this story focuses on, and I think that’s so fitting.
I’m sure this will be one of my favourites this year. I’m sad I didn’t read it sooner, but so glad I did now.
Please pick this one up! You won’t regret it.

4.5!!
After reading this & The Four Winds, I want to read every Kristin Hannah book!! This gave a unique perspective of WWII that I haven’t read before. The characters & their individual struggles felt very real to me.
Only subtracting half a star because I didn’t get too emotional and was expecting to! Still fabulous.

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah completely wrecked me in the most unforgettable way. This is the story of two French sisters, Vianne & Isabelle, who survive the unimaginable during WW2. While Vianne fights to protect her family & home in silence, Isabelle takes more dangerous, rebellious path. Each of them navigates the horrors of war in their own way, & what they endure is just beyond survival, it's about resistance, resilience, & love in the darkest of times.
I honestly don't remember the last time a novel made me cry this much. Almost every chapter tore something out of me. There's war, there's loss, there's love, beautiful, heartbreaking, desperate love, & all of it is so overwhelming. It didn't just break my heart, it shattered me into powdered dust & stepped on me again for good measure. It hurt so much that I had to curl in fetal position. Somehow I kept reading. Despite the pain, the story's also a tribute to bravery & sisterhood. Vianne & Isabelle are so flawed, so human, yet so powerful. I ached with them, feared for them, admired them.
Reading this also made me reflect on our current world. After everything history has shown us, humanity still hasn't learned. There are still wars, still innocent people caught in power struggles, still families & generations being torn apart. It makes me angry & deeply ashamed of how much we take for granted. Our peace, freedom, & loved ones. This novel isn't just historical fiction, it's a call to remember, to feel, & not to look away. It will haunt me for a long, long time.
