Too heavy on domestic political intrigues and bureaucracy for my tastes. And although I admire McEwan’s writing, in this case the narrative voice didn’t grab me; I had little care for any of the characters. But one more positive: an excellent final chapter.

I found this book so disappointing. I love Ian McEwan, but I felt like the characters were so flat, and the storyline wasn't engaging at all. Sad.

;The premise that art and ideas can make the world a freer and better place appeals. The characters felt too distant for me to care about.

Didn’t enjoy the ending, seemed to fizzle in an attempt at a twist.

Not my favorite of his books, but it was a good read.

What clever writing. Other GR reviewers have reviewed this much better than I could, especially the letter to Tom.
I recognised some of Tom's short story plots as Ian McEwan's, having read a volume of his short stories recently.
