- I don't love the militarism and trivializing of death in this series and I am choosing to ignore the author's bio. There is an open market for a nice leftist to write a romantasy series just saying!!!
- I cannot get over the love interest's name being Xaden especially when the rest of the characters have normal names. It's giving Mormon mommy blogger
- Despite these complaints it was otherwise a fun steamy speedreading romp and unfortunately I will be picking up the next one

Some of the romance elements are a bit heavy handed pushed into the fantastical. Despite this, it is still very enjoyable.
A little bit of Edward vs. Jacob if Jacob was immediately even more annoying.

I think the content warning for this book is really overblown - the violence and sexual content in this book was not that bad in my opinion but I understand that a teen may pick this book up or someone who doesn't know this is an adult romantasy book could be caught by surprise. I've just read worse is all I'm saying (especially the violence, I've read worse with characters I was more connected to in juvenile fiction).
So now that's out of the way - why isn't this a 4 star rating from me? There's a few reasons, we'll start with the no-spoilers part first:
- The book itself (and the chapters) are way too long for me. Or at least felt too long. This is just personal preference really. I just had to take a lot of breaks.
- I've just read a lot of fantasy books that I enjoyed more. This one was a lot like a well written fanfic to me, which means it was addicting and I enjoyed it overall but I also think there were hints that were too obvious when dropped and it could've been a bit better in general in certain parts.
- Speaking of which: There were a lot of characters I did not care about or were not memorable. I felt like Xaden, Violet, and Liam were the most well developed characters that I had an attachment to. That being said, I did like Violet's friends Sawyer, Ridoc, and Rhiannon - I feel like they do have potential.
They killed my favorite character! Liam was the one character besides Xaden and Violet that I was attached to and they KILLED him. You have a great, likable, memorable, and well developed side character (unlike several others) and he died because his dragon dies. Very upsetting folks. This was the most emotional and upsetting part of the book. They did the thing I hate with character relationships and I will try my best to explain it in a way that makes sense. When two characters get together I don't like it when the author splits them up to do the whole "I will earn your trust again because we belong together" for one person and "I love you but will pretend I'm not because you betrayed me and I don't want to talk it out even though I was kinda understanding about it two chapters ago" for the other person. It means that the tension will have to build all over again for them to get together again and it usually comes across as just really petty and immature. This trope is overdone and I never like it. I'd much rather see two people argue it out, then build their trust mutually and learn to work together as the ultimate power couple. That is satisfying and not nearly done enough in my opinion.
Okay rant over, if you read the spoilers, you know what I mean.
Anyway.
While the ending definitely makes me want to read the next book, where the relationships are left off still leaves it at a 3.75, not a 4. The last line is not enough for me on that front (though it is a great last line to get people wanting that next book). I'm sure I'll pick up the next book because I am curious about where the story is going (for those who read it and was able to read the spoilers section let me know if I should) but maybe not right away.
