"If you drop the weight you are carrying, it is okay. You can build yourself back up out of the pieces."

I enjoyed every single minute of Jack and August's story. It wrapped me up in a warm embrace and hasn't let me go yet. My favorite part was the two MCs and how different yet similar they are. It was beautiful watching it unfold both in audiobook format and book. The quote above comes from the book, which I would have missed if I didn't check out the book from the library.

Backstory: I only heard about this book because my wife purchased me literary socks for my birthday; I had only heard about one book, and the other two books were added to my TBR. This was one of them. I am glad this book found its way into my life.

It's a bit of a weird one, but a good one. It requires some suspension of disbelief along the way, but I just let it wash over me and enjoyed the ride. There is something about this book that just gripped my heart and held it in a vice. Though written in a bit of a disjointed way without a smooth "normal" organization of plot, the narrative pulled me in slowly until I was whole-heartedly attached to these characters. The anguish and love that pours through the words made me ache for August and Jack. The pace is fairly quick and the ending was stellar.

Wow, I loved this so much I can’t even begin to express how much. This book was perfect in every sense. It was so cleverly written and made. I will read everything by K. Ancrum in the future and currently have her other book on it’s way to me.

I was absolutely loving this book right up until the end. I feel like August didn’t grow as a character - if anything he’s much worse off. I love a good destructive character arch but the ending felt like they had successfully moved past their problems when I don’t think August actually learned anything. He’s still just as codependent on Jack as he was before the fire, and there was no indication of progress being made.

I feel this would be a 4-5 star book for me if Jack had told August at the end they needed time apart to heal and leave it at that.

I don’t typically write reviews, but I needed to say that if I could give this one 10 stars I would. August and Jack’s story is hauntingly beautiful and the way the author wrote their story is achingly brilliant. 10/10 would recommend.

This was so haunting, captivating, and atmospheric. The visual depiction of the main characters' decent into insanity through the darkening of the pages of the book was such an ingenious idea.
