My goodness. What a fucked up relationship. I was rooting for them and also praying someone would intervene. So freaking sad even with a happy ending. The decent into madness is bad enough, but knowing it could have been different is gut wrenching. I still think they still need a lot of therapy. Her writing is impeccable as always.
Holy shit.
"Jack lit his cigarette, holding it between strong white teeth before passing it over. Like a secondhand kiss on a breath of ash.

Not sure how to review this but wow this was excellent. Amazing characters who are seriously messed up but they cope the best they can with what life has handed them. The writing was gorgeous and I'm such a fan of the formatting in this book. 100000% worth buying a physical copy for. Read this asap people!

The Wicker King is the story of two 17 year old boys. August and Jack have been best friends for forever, closer than anyone could imagine. Jack sees a fantasy world that no one else can but August is drawn into it because he wants to protect Jack. They begin a quest to save this world, while trying to save Jack from the world itself. Truth and fiction are very much blurred in this haunting novel.
This is not one of those books that you finish and are done with. I don't think I'll ever be done with this book. I can't stop thinking about it! It's weird and complicated yet makes perfect sense. It has all the thrill of a horror story and all the heartbreak of a romance. It's so easy to fall in love with Jack and August and to want the best for them.
I would definitely say that it isn't for everyone. For one, if you don't like "weird" books, you probably won't like this one. And I also think this book could very triggering for a lot of people.
My only real complaint with the book is I wish I had been able to get to know some of the other characters a little better. I would've loved to learn more about them, BUT it is Jack and August's story so it does make sense.
Overall, just a completely haunting tale of illness, friendship, love, and loyalty. I have to give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars because it was just a great book!
