Thank you to Abe Moss for sending me an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book set to be released on June 11, 2024. This is my honest review without any outside influence.

“She sat on her bed with a 9mm pistol in her hands, held loosely in her lap, and imagined what it would be like to blow his brains out.”

This book starts off with a bang from the opening line. As soon as I read this first sentence, I knew I was in for a wild ride!

The story starts off with Connie and Evan traveling to his parents’ upscale summer home, so that Connie can meet Evan’s family. Connie is nervous about this weekend—but this pales in comparison to how apprehensive Evan appears to be. Evan already prepared Connie that they will be in for a miserable weekend because his parents are extremely pretentious—especially to those who they deem “beneath” their socioeconomic status (like Connie).

Having anticipated a stony reception, Connie is caught off guard when they find Evan’s mother waiting to greet them with open arms upon their arrival. No one is quite as dumbfounded by this as Evan. Evan’s mother asks Connie to stay in the kitchen and assist her, while telling Evan that he should head out to the shed to help his father and brother attempt to find rat traps. Connie and Evan both sense that something is amiss—this woman looks exactly like his mother, but could not be acting more different.

As Evan receives another uncharacteristically warm welcome from his father, Connie cuts herself in the kitchen and tries to find the bathroom in order to clean her cut. Upon further inspection, she notices that the house is extremely dark and all of the shades are drawn. As she is cleaning her cut in the bathroom, she believes she hears a noise coming from somewhere down the hall. As she makes her way back to the kitchen, she puts her ear to the door where she heard the noise—she then hears what seems to be muffled cries for help. Once Connie decides to open the door, there’s no turning back.

This was a great horror read for fans of horror with sci-fi/creature feature type elements. If you are a fan of the cult classic, “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” then this is the book for you! This book delves into the family dynamic and truly shows that “all that glitters is not gold.”

I went into this book not knowing what to expect from a horror/gore standpoint, but I was very pleasantly surprised with the body horror elements of this book. Some of these scenes were absolutely brutal and top notch, while balancing the sci-fi elements perfectly.

Family secrets will come to light and you have to read to find out the answer to the question, “is blood truly thicker than water?” Will the family come together or start to completely crumble under extreme duress? And who, if anyone, will make it out alive?

I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review:

Morsels by Abe Moss is a 305 page Cosmic Horror published by Grim Heart Publishing 6/11/2024.

Connie and her boyfriend Evan are bound for his parents’ anniversary to get together at the family’s summer home in the woods for the weekend. They had hoped the weekend would go by quickly and without much strife. Boy were they wrong!  Something seems not quite right about the family and what is that noise coming from the basement.

This is the book for those who are fans of movies such as 2006’s The Hills Have Eyes, 2003’s Wrong Turn and 2018’s The Farm.

I felt it was well written. Abe has this style of writing that really lets you tap into the primal fears of his characters. This book was creepy and grimy and claustrophobic and left you wanting more.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars

“You shouldn’t have done that.”

CHILLS. I got chills and they were 100% multiplying. Wow. Morsels will have you on your toes the entire time. I don’t want to spoil anything, but you have to read supernatural, may I even say extraterrestrial novel. It’s a total mindf*ck at times and totally fed into some interesting dreams.

Evan brings his girlfriend, Connie home for his parent’s anniversary dinner (weekend event). Evan informs Connie that his parents are very stand-off-ish and pretty dull and were not the best of parents, so when Evan’s mother answers the door with smiles and arms wide for hugs, let’s just say, the vibe was off and it only continued to get weirder.
