Killed by the tortures of academic study. Whilst I admire it wholly, any affection for the narrative has, I fear, potentially been eradicated by the horrors of AS exam technique.

Everyone knows the story Frankenstein despite never having read it. It is one of the most loved classics with Mary Shelley lauded as the mother of science fiction. It is only about time I finally picked it up to read.
At first, I was confused. Who is writing this letter? Is it Victor Frankenstein? What are you talking about? Who is Mrs. Saville? I was riddled with questions and too impatient to read on for the answers. It took me a while (and a bit of googling) to realize that this book is a story within a story within a story. Story-ception.
I didn’t remember this being in any of its move adaptations. Granted I never saw one it its entirety. Like an onion, it has layers. And I'm still on the surface.
Overall, I did enjoy this book. Although, I must admit the part of the daemon retelling his story was so boring. I understand that its necessary for us to understand and have empathy on the creature but it just dragged on and I lowkey don’t care.
At its core, it is a social commentary about parenting. At the surface, it is a wild ride. It has exceeded my non-existent expectations. I just know I would enjoy this more the second time I read this.

I have a lot to unpack here… so let’s get into it!
I wanted to read this book as it is a classic, and I felt like it deserved at least one read through! I am glad I gave it that chance.
The old English is damn hard to read sometimes. The amount of adjectives that are used was shocking to me, and it makes it even harder to read because many of these adjectives are foreign to me! I feel like every sentence I read a word I’ve never seen before, and I loved it! This book has expanded my vocabulary more than all of the other books I’ve read this year combined.
The story was great, though I feel like some areas got an extreme level of details, while other, more important, areas did not. I like how the plot focused a lot on how the monster impacted Frankensteins life, outside of their interactions. We were given a lot of insight into Frankensteins mindset, and how the monster impacted them.
This book was tense at times, and was kind of a thriller at other times, and I liked it for that reason. The story seemed well thought out and was captivating!
Overall, this was a challenging read, but I am very glad that I did read it. Time for the next classic, Dracula!
