What a wonderful, interesting story! I was reluctant to try a series with so many subsequent volumes, but I'm so glad I did.
Fascinating world, emotional story and a heroine who is prickly and hard to predict!

I've heard such good things about this series and I even REALLY liked this author's book Feed. So, during a book hangover after reading Lake Silence by Anne Bishop (seriously that series kills my desire to read anything else), I noticed the library had this book in and I found myself interested in reading it. I'll pick up anything I'm interested in reading during a book hangover. My excitement began high and slowly dropped after chapter 4....
October Daye is supposed to be this awesome PI. She's done this and that and become blah blah blah, yet the whole time she is going through this mystery and trying to survive, she doesn't prove it. In fact, it seems she is the last person of everyone she knows to realize who the murderer is. Seriously...
Because of all the almost dying for no reason and the little investigation actually done, I'm not a huge fan of this book. There were times I was bored.
Yet, I liked the world and some of the side characters. I'm super upset about what happened to one of my faves :( but it is the characters and the this world of faerie which made this 3 stars instead of 2 and is swaying me towards reading the next book-- perhaps it is another series that just needs time to warm up.

I had a hard time getting into this book. I found the different fae hierarchy interesting. I couldn't like Toby until more than halfway through the book. By that point I almost didn't want to like her.
Would I continue to read the series? I will give the second one a chance but I doubt I will ever check for the next release date.

This was enjoyable, but it wasn't as compelling as I was hoping it would be. Toby had a couple of annoying personality traits. One of them being that she didn't really think before acting most of the time. Then there was a character who groomed and took advantage of kids. Toby was one of his victims as a child and I felt she must have still had some Stockholm syndrome going on. Her relationship with him made me cringe. Thankfully that gets resolved.
I've heard this series gets better after three or four books, so I'm going to try and stick it out until then.

This was a very easy book to get into. From the opening scene I knew I would like October Daye. She's funny without being an annoying smart ass. She's brave but knows her limitations. And although she doesn't like all the pomp and circumstance of the Faerie courts, she knows how to be respectful when she needs to be. She was just very likeable.
The world-building an plot were a little harder to wrap my mind around. It seems quite complex, and we've only just scratched the surface. And some of the ideas were a bit weird, too. Still, it was well-written weirdness, and I imagine the richness of the world-building once I'm better used to it will only serve to make this series one of the greats.
It was predominately a murder mystery plot, but with lots of seeds of intrigue planted throughout involving October's own back story. In particular one major event that happened six months prior to the start of this book which was very intriguing, to put it mildly
There was no romance involved per se, but I see potential so this may be something that develops as the series goes on.
4.5 stars! ★★★★1/2

This book and this author had been recommended to me multiple times, so I decided to try it out even though dark urban fantasy is outside my usual comfort zone. Unfortunately I still wasn't a huge fan. The trauma that Toby experienced at the start of the book was really hard for me to read through. Even though it wasn't explicit or graphic or violent, it is one of my personal fears as a parent, and that colors so much of her character and the rest of the book that it also affected my enjoyment of the story to the point that I had to force myself to finish. It was just too dark in tone for my personal preference, so I will not be continuing the series.
