Beautiful, thoughtful series of letters from Nafisi to her deceased father, blending personal reflection, social musings, and literary analysis. She deepened my appreciation of some favorite writers and helped me think about authors I've disliked in new ways. Naturally, I didn't always agree with her points, such as the insinuation content warnings prevent people from engaging with difficult material rather than making it easier for people to go in prepared, but this was a rewarding book.

I think this book is pretty great! The references to 2020 on the pandemic and Trump make sense, given the time it was written, but it was kind of exhausting to read more about it so soon after. Maybe this book will get better as it ages.

I don’t think I realized how much I needed this when I started reading. It’s a different perspective on one of my favorite topics, but has been especially useful for processing current events.
I’ve read similar books, but I was unprepared for the fact that I have lived through the world and US events this one provides commentary on.
I wish I could provide more insight and nuance to the conversation, but I’ll leave that to the people who are smarter than I am. I’ll be thinking about this one for a while.
