Read the story translated by Robert Fagles for senior lit year
I can't do better than this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mScdJURKGWM
There's almost no drama. The main problem that sets up the play, the plague besetting Thebes, is never resolved. The action either occurred before the play starts, or takes place offstage. The characters are cut-outs, and they feel almost completely alien. And yet this play is compelling. It's simple, powerful, and for all of the alien quality of the characters, there is a core here that cuts to the heart. I can hardly believe that I've made it this far in life without actually reading it, and I'm glad that I did.

What can you say about Oedpius Rex that hasn't been said? The sheer tragedy of the humour has become a key story in modern society, perhaps thanks to Freud's adoption of the story to produce the Oedipal principal, or perhaps because of the fact that this story continues to transgress and violate some of our deepest societal rules.

*read for hist101* sad and disturbing. even tho i was forced to read this play for school, i actually thought it was super interesting!
Okay I'm not sure if I read this exact translation, but this is the last thing I had to read for my mythology class this semester! It was also super short. I thought it was okay, but I already know the story, and it was a bit hard to read because it was an older translation. It's not like I have any problems with it, but...eh.
I mean, I don't really have anything else to say about it. Like poor Oedipus?
