I don't now what the fuss is all about. The first part is way too long (yes I know is supposed to reflect the difference in the way children, adolescents and adults perceive time, la-di-da), then it got better. I liked how it portrayed the role of women as pioneers on the frontier, something you don't hear much about. Some good inset stories in there too. The end of Pavel and Peter's backstory had me rereading the paragraph several time to make sure I had really read that!

I really enjoyed the first 100 or so pages of this book. But then lost all interest in the story, the characters, etc.
93rd book for me on Mustich’s list.
There is something wistful and lovely in this book that reminds me of Little Women and that is the highest compliment I think I can give to a work of fiction.
The characters were so real and complex and full of life. Can’t believe I’d never read anything by Willa Cather before.

My second and probably last attempt to read Willa Cather. My Antonia features some lovely passages about nature, but the prose is not beautiful enough to compensate for the book's episodic narrative and shallow characterization.

I almost downgraded this book to two stars on my second time reading it because I didn't really care for the first half. The second half sort of made up for it though, so I am going to keep it at three. I never really got the feeling that this book was about Antonia, more just about what it was like to live in Nebraska.

I am trying to read more literature from this era, but am struggling with American authors. I’m sure British authors from this time were racist too, but because they don’t mention race you are saved from a weird little rant in the middle of the book that makes clear they don’t see Black people as fully human.
This book was ok. I expected more to happen, it was quite modern in its lack of big plot points.
The introduction was confusing - I get the conceit that the whole thing is written by someone else but where is our author in this? The introduction implies she was from Jim’s New York life but didn’t it say she also knew Antonia? Antonia never goes to New York?
I might read more by her. But maybe not.
