Three years after events from the previous book, The Runaway Wife, Connie is starting to feel a little restless. Time for another adventure then. So when she finds a box that seems to show her paternal grandmother originally came from Italy, Connie decides that’s where she will go.
Joining her on her road trip are two ladies she met in a flower arranging class, Maggie and Gill. These two couldn’t be more different if they tried. Gill is lonely and desperate for a new man after two failed marriages. Maggie would like nothing more but to feel free. Somehow these three ladies strike up the most amazing friendship on their journey to Italy in a motor home.
There will be lots of amazing experiences, new people to meet and even Cupid may make himself known at some point. The adventure isn’t all plain sailing though. Maggie is carrying a secret around with her that may catch up with them all. And what will Connie find out when they reach their destination? Whatever it is, this trip will change their lives forever.
This story made me incredibly nostalgic for all things Italy, which has always felt like home to me. It was huge fun to recognise so many places I’ve visited myself. But more than anything, it made me envious as I’d love to do something like this. Just jump in a motor home or a car and take off, not necessarily knowing where you’ll be spending the night or even if you’ll be coming back to the life you’ve left behind.
I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with these three amazing women. There’s something to admire and like about each and everyone of them. I can only hope that I’ll be as healthy, adventurous and fun as they are when I am that age. This is a truly inspirational, delightful and uplifting story with plenty of chuckles but also rather moving at times.
A heartwarming, entertaining and perfect summer read! I loved being a part of another one of Connie’s adventures and I do so hope there will be more to come. After all, it’s never too late for another adventure and you’re never too old to live life to the fullest!

"Was the world her oyster? Silly cliché, that! The world was more like the carrot, dangling seductively in front of her nose."

Wait, what? It's All About Books featuring a contemporary romance read, and with such a high rating at that? Don't be too surprised, because I can enjoy the genre every once in a while if I'm in the mood for it. And this is exactly what happened when I saw The Getaway Girls. Suffering from the so-called travel bug myself, I love road trip stories. It doesn't really matter to me if I have visited those places myself, as reading about them makes it feel as if I were on a mini vacation in the first place and I love discovering new places to visit... But when I found out part of the story was set in Italy, I was sold. I have such great memories of this country and I couldn't wait to discover what the main characters would encounter! I picked up The Getaway Girls on a day I really needed something light, entertaining, fun and engaging to distract myself, and this story delivered exactly that. I LOVED that the three main characters are seventy-year-olds and that they going on a road trip together. The character development is spot on and I really liked just how different their personalities and backgrounds were. It was great to see how they reacted to each other and they journey, and I had a wonderful time following them on their journey. It's not all fun as they are trying to run away from Maggie's dodgy partner Ringer, and I really liked that aspect of the plot as it added a little suspense to the whole story as well. But my favorite part of The Getaway Girls has without doubt to do with the descriptions of the places they visited. It almost felt I was on vacation in France and Italy as well! A welcome distraction from the cold winter months down here in Argentina... I had a blast reading this story and I liked how each of the three main characters got her own ending. It's definitely made me curious about The Runaway Wife as well as I really liked Connie's character! If you are a fan of the genre, this one is a must-read.
If you love a good road trip story with well developed and interesting characters, lots of sightseeing, funny moments, a dash of suspense and a dose of romance that is just right, you will love The Getaway Girls as well. I had so much fun following Connie, Gill and Maggie around and I loved the fact that they were seventy-year-olds, as I don't see older main characters around that often. Entertaining, uplifting, a pinch of suspense and a healthy dose of summer romance... This story will make you forget about your own problems for a while as you join the main characters on their journey.
The Getaway Girls by Dee MacDonald was an absolute hoot! This book was filled with a crazy cast of characters with all sorts of quirks and flaws that all blended so well together to make their journey one they, and I, won't soon forget.
The Getaway Girls follows Connie, Maggie and Gill as they all try to escape their past and present circumstances by taking a motor home trip to Italy - with some bonus cash they weren't expecting. Through their journey they all learn more about themselves and what they want for this stage of their lives. It is a journey of friendship and self-discovery through the beautiful landscapes of France and Italy.
One thing I most like about this book was just how spunky and sassy all these women were. I often found myself smiling and giggling to myself over what situations they got themselves into, how they got themselves out of them, and their hilarious dialogue throughout it all. The people that they met and experienced along the way only added to the enjoyment.
The ending of this book was one that I greatly enjoyed. It didn't have the "happy ending" that I was expecting at the beginning, but it was definitely a beautifully happy ending for each individual woman and it suited each one just right. When I came to the end of the book I also learned that there is another story by MacDonald about Connie and her life prior to the start of this book so I will definitely want to check that one out as well.
**Many thanks to Dee MacDonald, Bookouture, and NetGalley for an advanced e-book in exchange for an honest review.

I first met Connie in The Runaway Wife and absolutely loved her character so was so excited when I realised there was another book featuring her. You don't have to have read The Runaway Wife to enjoy this one as it works perfectly well as a stand alone but as it's a fabulous book I would urge you to read it also.
Through Connie and her friends we realise that life doesn't end when you reach a certain age. If anything, for some, it's just beginning. Connie, Gill and Maggie are three quite different women all wanting to make changes in their lives. I thought they were incredibly brave to drive off on an adventure together and was so glad I got taken on their journey with them.
You can't help but fall in love with the idea of setting off for pastures new and getting to see the world whilst your at it. I've only ever spent a very brief time in France and never been to Italy and after reading this book I will certainly be rectifying that. I felt so chilled out and relaxed reading of the women's travels and fell in love with the places as much as they did.
As with everything there are some ups and downs on their travels but what the author delivers is a fabulous and entertaining read that I didn't want to end. If anything, I am hoping there is going to be more as by the end I felt like firm friends with the three women and I really hope to be able to catch up with them in the future.
The Getaway Girls is a heart warming and fun filled story that every woman should read. It's an uplifting story that makes you realise that you are never too old to go after what you want in life. Loved it.
My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
