This story was long a drawn out and never answered the questions that i wanted to be answered. I thought it would reflect more on the characters (from the maze runner)and what their lives were like before being sent into the maze.

Dang this book was dark, however that was the intent. This book takes place after the sun flare and prior/leading up to the virus and cranks. Obviously it is meant to show just how bad things were as they ended, but I wasn't quite expecting things to be that bad.

Going into this book, it's similar to a Rogue One situation, you know that the main characters are going to die, well in this case most of the main characters, and you know things won't have a happy ending. However, I don't think you can necessarily prepare yourself for the end, even when you know the characters won't make it. I won't say I fell in love with any of the characters in this book, however I did like some of the main characters, including Alec, Mark, and Trina. I liked Mark and Trina from the get go, however over time Alec sort of grew on me.

I honestly don't even have words for what all happened to the characters. But to learn that the flare virus was spread because the Post Flares Coalition felt that there were not enough resources for the entire population? And to learn that the virus was originally made for biological warfare. AND that the virus was only supposed to make the brain shut down and painlessly???

I felt bad for DeeDee, aka Teresa. She was just a little kid when the virus was released and on purpose. But the group her and her parents were with treated her like she was a monster. I can't imagine what kind of emotional and mental damage that did to her. Like imagine being four and the people you're supposed to be able to trust treat you like somethings wrong with you. I also felt so bad when she had to leave Trina. After everything that had happened, Trina was one of the first people to show her kindness and love.

After reading the main trilogy this book wasn't nearly as interesting to me. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it and it gave some really interesting backstory to how the flare virus and the cranks came to be, however, it felt like it fell short. I almost wish I would have read this book before the trilogy. I think that it might have drawn me in some and gotten me excited to read the trilogy. However, I probably would have been a little lost because the original trilogy gives some insight that this doesn't.

I love the Maze runner trilogy, but I think that this book was unnecessary. If you want to read it, go ahead, but I only recommend the trilogy.

It was interesting learning about what happened when the sun flares and the Flare hit. It was also fascinating (and quite creepy) to explore the development of the Flare: to see the insanity it made people do and to witness how normal people's brains were transformed by the virus.

As a prequel I understood why the context is important for the rest of the series, the plot had the potential to be really good, but it was just sooooo slow and I personally was very bored reading it.
