I’ve had this one on my list for a while and decided that it sounded like a great option for one of my holiday reads. Also, it’s a lot easier not to be jealous of the cover when you are also in a tropical place.
Bad Tourists is about three friends who travel to the Maldives to celebrate a divorce and soon discover that you can still find trouble in paradise. I loved the remote, beautiful setting and how it created an extra tension in the story, when things start to take a turn and the isolation becomes claustrophobic.
I was in no way expecting what happened at the start of the book, and knew that I was going to be in for an interesting ride with this story; that feeling continued throughout the whole book. Sometimes in a mystery thriller, I might get more than an inkling of where the story is going, but in this case, I felt as if I was constantly surprised.
One aspect of the story had me a bit suspicious; stick with me, I’m making it vague on purpose; there was something in the timing of an incident that made me think I had figured out a crucial clue. Then, as the story progressed, I realised that it wasn’t suspicious, but there was no explanation for the discrepancy, and it still bugs me that it wasn’t addressed in some way.
Darcy, Kate, and Camilla were such different personalities, but this worked brilliantly in the context of the story; their clashes added to the strain of the situations they found themselves in. It definitely becomes more interesting as what brought the friends together comes to light.
I can’t divulge much more about the story because it’s something that you want to experience without too much prior knowledge, but I enjoyed how all the pieces came together. It was a bit outlandish at points, but I was so engrossed that I quite enjoyed the drama.

I found this book on a list of recommendations to read if you enjoyed watching THe White Lotus. This book fits the bill! It wasn’t what I expected. It opens with a flashback to a murder massacre 20 or so years before the present time. 3 women - Darcy, Camilla and Kate - are connected to each other because of the events of that massacre. They end up becoming friends, and book a trip to the Maldives to celebrate Darcy’s divorce. But the island resort ends up unraveling a mystery surrounding the murder massacre from years ago. There were lots of twists and turns and I was on the edge of my seat! Definitely recommend as a good vacation read.

Full disclosure, I don't typically read thrillers, but I was on vacation on a beach and the book takes place on vacation on a beach so it seemed appropriate.
Anyways, I liked the characters and I liked the setting, but I was a bit disappointed when I figured out who the killer was halfway through and guessed how they did it. Of course, there were a few twists but overall it was a bit unfulfilling.
Like I said, the characters were great and the hook was intriguing. I'd say this is a solid vacation read if you're looking for a light read (if you can call a murder mystery light, that is) set in a beautiful resort.
