"Winter Counts" was an interesting mystery with danger and corruption. I wasn't entirely surprised by the end but enjoyed the story.

Loved Native American culture setting, extremely well written, great plot
Not my usual pick but I loved it! I also enjoyed learning some insight on a culture I know next to nothing about. The final chapters had me captivated to read more. 4.5/5

I knew the real culprit before I was halfway through. It’s very slow and boring for a thriller.

This book was so good!! It deals with the issue of crime and drugs and corruption that makes its way into reservations because of the dysfunctional justice system set up by the US government. This book does a really good job of showing how spirituality and community helped the main character become his best self. And I know this isn’t always realistic, but it does end on a positive note.
Debut thriller featuring a tough but appealing enforcer-for-hire on a Lakota reservation where crimes under federal jurisdiction often go unpunished. A gritty mystery in a richly detailed setting peopled with interesting characters.

This is a pretty poor crime novel, made worse by the fact that I read it on the back of reading Elmore Leonard and James Crumley. The brilliance of their dialogue shows just how badly wrong Weiden gets it. Not one conversation in this book rings true. The main character, Virgil, is so thin and wet, despite his penchant for violence. And everyone else in the story exists purely to make sure Virgil gets to where he needs to be; they have no personal motivation for any of their actions.
Bit of a head scratcher trying to work out why so many people have praised this one.
