2019 Re-read
This book still suffers from the issues I had with it three years ago. I’m continuing on the Bloodwitch only because of my interest in Aeduan and Iseult.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It pains me to give this a low rating but Windwitch definitely suffered from second book syndrome.
I'm not sure why the second book was called Windwitch when Merik didn't really do much the entire book aside from trying to seek revenge on his sister. The most exciting parts of the book were during Iseult and Aeduan's travels. I really enjoyed reading about Aeduan and Iseult and I found myself wanting to skip Safi and Merik's parts. This book really solidified how much I like Aeduan as a character. He and Iseult are by far the most interesting characters in the story. I hope Bloodwitch continues to build on these two, and I am excited to see what happens to them.
I've read a lot of fantasy novels so I have to critique Windwitch for things that were lacking in terms of it being a fantasy book. These books really need a glossary or index defining the types of witcheries and what element they fall under; aether, water, earth or void. I was very confused at times about the different magic types and by the second book the world building and magic system should be a lot clearer. We shouldn't need to still be learning vital information about this world in book 3. The maps need to have the rivers labeled and vital parts of the land marked. I had no idea where Iseult and Aeduan were within the Disputed Lands.
There is a lack of a central plot in this book. As the characters were all divided up, the story jumped all over the place. The first book set us up with a main villain, the Weaverwitch. In this book there are a number of different villains including pirates, emperors, lords and shadow creatures. Other fantasy novels have the characters facing different threats but there is usually a common goal that all the characters share. I couldn't find that in Windwitch. Also, if Susan Dennard is going to continue to flip to different perspectives within the story it shouldn't be two pages for one character followed by five pages for another and then half a page for a different character during the same chapter. Either finish the chapter with the character you started with or finish the perspective on a complete thought.
I think I had high expectations for this novel after Truthwitch so it sadly fell flat for me.
I.... am full of so many emotions.
I loved Truthwitch and idk why I put off reading this book for so long. Well I absolutely loved it and I think I enjoyed it even more than the first book? It built up the characters so much. Their powers were expanded upon, they formed new relationships and alliances. Ugh I just love these characters so much. The drama. The slow burn relationships. It's just, *chef's kiss*. I'm definitely not going to take over a year to continue this series this time I swear.
I was hoping to enjoy this as much as Truthwitch. But alas. I think I didn't enjoy this one as much because there really wasn't any continuation of romance and most of the main characters were apart from each other through the whole book. And the story and characters didn't hold my attention as well as Truthwitch. But I'm still holding out hope for Sightwitch and Bloodwitch.
3.5* i’m living for this Aeduan and Iseult arc, but the rest of the story just kinda felt...dull and quite frankly a little boring :\ not that there was any lacking action, more just the plot was on the slower side
however, i still love the characters a lot and i’m excited for the release of Bloodwitch!
DNF’d At about 50%
I am so in love with this series,although I am undecided on whether this installment is 4 or 5 stars. Here's why:
This is definetly more of a character driven story and there is some absolutely fantastic character development in here which I love.
However I feel like the overall plot doesn't really progress too far in the story. As a small example; we dont learn anything of significance about Safi's background or history.
Iseult and Aeduen are my favourite characters in the series and I totally adore their scenes in the story...Actually I wanted more of them! I love where Ms Dennard is going with Iseult in particular.
There were some pacing issues for me aswell. As the characters are spread out all over the Witchlands the story jumps around alot. This doesn't normally bother me but I felt here that scenes were too short sometimes or even had abrupt endings.
Overall I enjoyed this story immensely, it just didn't have quite the same flow as Truthwitch. You see why I'm having problems on rating this?! I'll probably end up changing it at least once in the coming days 🙄
More like 3.5, but I did enjoy it so I rounded up. I really enjoyed everyone's separate character development arcs, but miss the group dynamic. Review to come
