I love my children and I want all of them to be safe and happy.
This review has very light spoilers in the section that talks about characters.
I had to go back and reread my review for Truthwitch so I could compare my feelings from book 1 to Windwitch (book 2). And, in my first review I mentioned how towards the middle and into the end I lost steam and the book took a lot longer to finish. Windwitch is this same feeling but multiply it by 100. It also didn't help that once I was in a POV and interested in what was going on the chapter would end and it would switch POVs really pulling me out of the story.
For the length of this book, I feel like not a lot of action happened until the end. It seemed like a lot of details were being added for future books in the series, but the characters seemed to be slightly goalless at the beginning. Or rather the goals that they did have seemed to not be as fleshed out, which I think I'll be able to explain better when I breakdown each character. Overall this book had serious second book syndrome where it felt like its purpose was a lot of setup for future books.
Okay my feelings on each character is where most of my feelings around the book hinge.
Safi - This might differ from others' opinions, but I thoroughly enjoyed Safi's chapters. She definitely takes more of a backseat in this book compared to the first which may put those who really liked her in the first off. But, she as a character always is interesting to me. Her personality is my favorite of all the POVs. For the most part she doesn't repeat her internal feelings and woes over and over so her chapters tend to always feel like something new will happen. And, the plot with the Hell-Bards is intriguing to me and had me asking questions.
Iseult - I also really liked Iseult's personal growth in this book. Her growing confidence was great to read through. Though her motivation at the endwhere she decided to stay with Adeuan and help him return Owl didn't have a lot of build up to so it felt out of character for me and put me off a bit.
Safi and Iseult are the main reasons I'm considering still moving forward with this series.
Merik - The namesake for this book. He was not my fave at all in the first one, but I appreciated him more and his journey by the end of this book. Still found him boring at the beginning because I didn't really understand what his plan or goal was with trying to find evidence on Vivia. So, a lot of his beginning chapters were him wallowing and repeating the same emotions over and over. Which got old quickly.
Adeuan - I like the growing tension between him and Iseult, but I can't quite pin why his chapters didn't intrigue me as much as the first book. I think it's because I didn't quite get why he cared about chasing the money as desperately as he was. (If I missed the reason can someone fill me in on that)
Vivia - This is a new POV that dragged the beginning for me because I was more interested in the characters that I already had connections with and her chapters took a lot of screen time. However I waited foreveerrrrr for her and Merik to reunite. I was deeply interested and invested in that plot point. I still wish there was more to the reuniting than what we got.
Okay in an effort to keep this review from being too long winded I'm going to end with this -- I'm debating continuing with the series. I'm not opposed to reading Bloodwitch, but as of right now it's not a priority book for me to read.

Reread 2019 - I am thoroughly enjoying my reread of this series and am finding so many more connections since I’ve read them before! Love the characters and this world so much!
I need Bloodwitch. I need more Aeduan and Isuelt...that is all.

It took me over a year to complete this book... and I feel lachrymose. Not due to the story ending but due to the passing of my love for this world and it’s characters.
3/5 Stars
I’m thoroughly praying that Bloodwitch is better than this installment. If it isn’t, I may be giving up on this series.
I WILL SAY because I finished Avatar: The Last Airbender today on Netflix, I was thoroughly reminded of the element-bending world while reading Windwitch... almost to a suspiciously symmetrical point.
Oh, well. I will always need more Avatar. (Except the live action. We do not speak of such blasphemy.)

Although I enjoyed the first book more, I absolutely loved this! I can totally see myself loving it as much, if not more than the first one when I go back and reread it. My reading of this was patchy and distracted, which really detracted from the experience, but oh well!
First off, I want to commend Dennard for cutting down on the number of perspectives. In the first book, I was constantly counting the pages until we got to an Isuelt/Audeun chapter, and although I still did that, I found myself enjoying the other characters too. All of them got uper important development, so I'm super excited to see where it takes them!
Like I said in my review of Truthwitch, Audeun and Isuelt are one of my favorite ships of all time!! And this book gave us even more of them together!! Do you know how satisfying it is to read an enemies to lovers that isn't insta love? It's absolutely amazing! And these two have so much chemistry. Every one of their scenes is filled with angst, and its perfect. If they don't get together in the next one, I might just die.
On top of them being amazing, we also have huge development in Vivia. Near the beginning, I wasn't too sure about her chapters. They kind of irritated me. As we got to see more of her though, I really grew to love her, she's the perfect morally grey character.
I'm super happy that Safi seems to be getting a new love interest, because Merik is not anyone I'm interested in reading about. I mean, he's ok. That's it though. Caden on the other hand, is one of the most interesting characters I've ever read, and I need to know more about him!
Well, I'm cutting this review short so I can avoid my tbr and start Bloodwitch, so I guess this is it! But seriously, this book is amazing, and everyone needs to read this series.

I really didn't expect to cry at the end of this book? But Merik finally won my heart over, and there where so many little things that shocked me. This instalment was slow, and definitely suffers little second-book syndrome, but there was clearly a movement in plot and character development. I also liked how all of the characters kind of had a similar storyline of escape, but they all approached it so differently. Vivia's POV was a brilliant addition and Aeduan and Isuelt has made me very excited to read Bloodwitch, very, very soon. (More thoughts to come when I've processed the complicated emotions)
*3.5 Stars*
The characters continue to be the strongest part of this series (aside from the really neat world and politics) and though a lot of the characters’ relationships changed in this book they were still so interesting and lovely and I am rooting for literally all of them all the time. I read this book hoping desperately for some awesome reunion scenes and I received exactly 0 so I have very high hopes for some in book 3.
Also Prince Merik has BIG Zuko energy this entire book and I am so ready to continue reading the man’s character arc.
