Delightful is the wrong word, but it's what I'm going to use. This was a delightfully creepy, disturbing prequel novella to Drowning in the Deep, and I'm so freaking happy I finally read it! I loved learning what happened to the Atargatis first hand, even though, the readers knew the outcome from the book. It's (again I'm going to use the wrong word) nice to have seen what these folks all went through. Horrifying, but it gave me a glimpse at what all happened. And since it's been years since I read Drowning in the Deep, it was "fun" to dive back into this world and story.

I had SO much fun with this story, which instead of feeling like a fantasy which I expected I found had a very sci-fi horror movie feel with a great build up of tension. The only short falling for me is that since it's a novella you don't have much time to get too attached to the ill-fated crew aboard the Atargatis, so the individual losses had less impact than it might have, but the story is well paced with a great atmosphere, writing style, a really vicious take on mermaids and like I said I had a lot of fun reading this.

It's eerie. It's terrifying. It explains why we left the ocean for a good reason and every time we go back it's a bad time.
Seriously, though. Don't go looking for mermaids.
