Rolling in the deep is a horrifyingly cinematic story about a research vessel sieged by vicious mermaids that leave behind a mystery that is later investigated in the next full length novel, Into the Drowning Deep.
I enjoyed both of these novels for their fast paced and visceral action scenes. Grant has such an amazing way of describing the mermaids and the horror occurring, it’s always a blast to listen to. Another aspect I love about Mira Grant’s Rolling in the Deep series are her diverse and multifaceted characters.
However, these characters end up also being the main problem I had with this novella, and the following novel. There are just WAY too many characters, that each get their own POV and you end up reading the same scenario from all other perspective quite a lot. While this adds a lot of depth to the characters and can be interesting, it also severely bogs down the story and weakens the plot. I get so tired of listening to so and so’s viewpoint on the same situation that the plot begins to lose any flow left.
While Grant hasn’t quite found the right pacing yet, I still enjoy her writing enough to recommend her books! Just be aware of her long winded habits prior to starting…

3.5/5
This was a super fun addition to the Drowning Deep universe, but I had the same issue that I had with the full length book: too many POVs. It made the novella feel a little scattered, but it was still enjoyable.
***I will say this should be read AFTER Into The Drowning Deep because it totally spoils the mystery of the book. After reading the full book, you'll pick up on a bunch of easter eggs in the novella, but it should be read: book first, then novella.

I love Mira's novels; her Feed series was phenomenal and the various short related novellas were quite good also. However, I was a bit disappointed in this one (not in the Feed universe, just our normal, boring one :-) ).
My biggest gripe was the uneven pacing. I felt the beginning took too long and the middle and end parts were too rushed. I haven't seen that with her other novellas so maybe it was just me. In addition, some of the basic science behind the "antagonists" was ignored (probably for the purposes of the story) with relation to deep-sea creatures quickly surfacing with no ill-effects. It was nothing major but definitely less thought out than her zombie explanation.
THe high point for me was the amount of detail and authenticity surrounding the "mermaid troupe." I wouldn't be surprised if she had spent some serious research time on that subject. It read very well and I was fascinated by the detail. If she made it up, then even more kudos go to her!

I was happy to read a horror with blood thirsty mermaids. The crew is diverse. One of them was deaf and used ASL to communicate, which added another layer to the story. There is a book set 7 years after this one. I’m 100% going to read it.

So good. I was not at all surprised when I heard the news that it was optioned for film, hopefully we'll be able to see it come to life on screen.
Immediately got the next installment, a novel (Into the Drowning Deep).

This was a very good prequel to Into the Drowning Deep and I definitely recommend it. I also definitely recommend reading it AFTER you have read Into the Drowning Deep because it has some minor spoilers for that book. But this would also work as a stand alone if you are just looking for something short and fun. Definitely recommend this series.
Spoilers ahead!
I was a little disappointed with the prequel to Mira Grant's "Into the Drowning Deep." After eating up the first book, there was so much I wanted to know about the Atargatis' failed mission, and especially the giant female mermaid, but unfortunately, just like "Into the Drowning Deep," she remains unseen, though she is the ultimate cause of the ships demise. I attribute a lot of my disappointment to the fact that this book came before "Into the Drowning Deep" even though it is considered a prequel. So many of the ideas, like the communication between Tori and her sister, Ann, hadn't been developed when this book was written in 2015 (I had been looking for that too).

As I'm not a horror reader I was dubious of this going in, but I ended up loving it. I will be reading the second book.
