Big cast of characters for such a short story. None of them are likeable or that interesting. We know the ending from the start so nothing really surprising happens, and thus there is little tension or suspense to be had. It just fell flat for me. I’ll give it points for creature design.

I loved the world created in Into The Drowning Deep and wanted to experience more. I was hoping to find a sequel but instead stumbled upon this novella, a sort of prequel, published prior to the full length novel. Unfortunately, I don’t think this is worth your time. It sort of seems like a first attempt at what later became Into the Drowning Deep. It felt a bit hollow and unevenly paced. I listened to the audiobook and was shocked when I found it ended. It didn’t feel like a fully realized story. I think the story she was trying to tell lent itself better to a longer format which is why Into The Drowning Deep works so well. Also, I think Into The Drowning Deep is a more compelling story when the details of what happened on the Atargatis remain a bit of a mystery. My recommendation is to skip Rolling in the Deep and just stick with Into The Drowning Deep which is fantastic.
2/5⭐️

1. I read Into the Drowning Deep first and was absolutely elated to find out I still don’t have to leave that story and I could read this novella.

2. Incredible.

3. Finished this series in one day. Couldn’t be happier.

Some aspects of the story didn't really make sense to me, but I got what I came for, which was killer mermaids.

maybe i’ve just read a lot of subversive mermaid narratives but this was just super boring to me. the “shocks” near the end were really predictable and the prose relied pretty heavily on dialogue, which is tough to do if you can’t distinguish one character’s voice that well from another.

4.7 rounded up!
I wiiiiiiish I would’ve read this before Into the Drowning Deep, but it didn’t ruin the story for me! I just would’ve preferred the story line up of the novella first, then the novel! Although, the big twist of the novel wouldn’t have been as shocking to me. (I’m back and forth)
I DIGRESSSSSS…this was a solid story. I loved it. I only wished it was longer! This would’ve been a great full length novel with Into the Drowning Deep as a sequel!

This is a short, scary piece of great writing!

I read all of this novella while on the treadmill at the gym. It was okay. I’ve tried Feed by this author and I had to DNF that one. I just really don’t think this author is for me, no matter how interesting her books sound. I just don’t care for the writing and execution to be honest. This wasn’t terrible, but not as good as I was hoping either.
