Very interesting. It is only the second book I've read by [author: Paulo Coelho] and it's written in somewhat the same format as the Poisonwood Bible. I finished the book under a big oak tree in perfect weather and perfect solitude, and went for a walk afterwards, considering everything I had just taken in. This book reminded me that we all have access to the cosmic that powers us, we just have to train ourselves to do so. We have to give in order to receive - teach to learn - break out of our daily grind every once in a while to remember who we are. Be different. I was right, it took me longer than most books to read, but I'm glad I did because it made me think.
뭐랄까.. 참 좋은 메세지도 많긴 많았는데 아테나가 제 눈에는 여신보다는 좀 미성숙한 인간으로밖에 안 보였거든요...;;;

A feminist's joy. I changed my entire life philosophy after reading this book. If you want to learn how to let go and be yourself, Witch of Portobello is perfect.

Untuk saya, dari segi penyampaian cerita nggak terlalu engaging—aku expect petualangan Athena akan banyak dijelaskan semacam Sang Alkemis atau gejolak pikirannya banyak dideskripsikan seperti Veronika Memutuskan Mati, tapi aku nggak nyesel tetep lanjutin karena gradually ceritanya berkembang makin baik dan plot twist di akhir cerita lumayan bikin puas.

This book served as my Holy Week read for three reasons: 1)I forgot to take my other books with me when I left for my province; 2)I finished the book I bought at the station as soon as I got home; 3)This was the only book at home that I haven't read and didn't own.
It was a fitting read, since the book tackles themes of spirituality, life's purpose and even love. Of course, The Witch of Portobello is a quintessential Coelho, but with a female lead character. The narrative is presented in fragments using different characters' perspectives or accounts of the events (reminiscent of the short story "In a Grove"). The premise is that an investigation was underway after the murder of Athena aka The Witch of Portobello.
As I have mentioned in my review of another Coelho book, this novel is at times preachy. The chosen technique of Coelho, fragmented perspectives, should have prevented this tendency. But the quality of preachiness finds its way still, which could only mean that the different character accounts did not differ that much in terms of voice. In over-explaining certain elements, Coelho ends up squashing the magic and power of readers' insight. Show don't tell, the masters say.
The novel also fell short in fleshing out the views on spirituality that it poses. Reading the accounts of Athena's teachers/mentors gives readers a glimpse into the viewpoints of people with different takes on life, fate, religion and spirituality. These felt rushed to me and as good as seeing the tip of the iceberg only.
Exploration of the themes may have been fully realized in the characterization at least of Athena. But to me, it felt like the elements did not come together to evoke sympathy or enlightenment. The novel was a good story, with a twist at the end (which I foresaw from the start). It was just not satisfying.
